Das Herz, es schwelgt, das Herz, es träumt,
Von Erdenqual getrennt.
[Auf grünem]1 Hügel hingestreckt,
Schläft [sanft]2 der Jäger ein -
Doch plötzlich ihn der Donner weckt,
Und Blitze zischen drein.
Wo bist du, heilig Abendroth,
Wo, sanfter Hesperus?
[Es wandelt sich]3 in Schmerz und Noth

La sera tinge la valle di rosso,
Espero splende delicatamente.
I faggi stanno tutti in silenzio,
E mormora piano il torrente.
Veleggiano nuvole con il bordo dorato
Sullo sfondo del firmamento chiaro;
Il cuore sogna, il cuore si fa lieto,
da ogni affanno terreno reso puro.
Sopra la collina verde sta disteso
Tutto immerso nel sonno il cacciatore --
Ma un tuono lo risveglia all'improvviso,
e un lampo sente sibilare.
Dove sei tu, santo bagliore delle sere,
e dove sei, Espero delicato?
Si trasforma così in angoscia e dolore
Ogni piacere che ci è stato dato.
