A l’Odenwald hi ha un arbre que té moltes branques verdes, allà hi he estat ben bé mil vegades amb el meu tresor! Damunt seu hi ha un petit ocell que xiula meravellosament; el meu bell amor i jo l’escoltem quan hi anem plegats. L’ocell reposa a la branca més alta, i quan nosaltres l’esguardem de seguida es posa a xiular. L’ocell és al seu niu ben bé a l’arbre verd. Ai, tresor meu, jo era al teu costat o fou només un somni? I quan vaig tornar al seu costat l’arbre s’havia assecat; un altre amant era amb ella, a ben segur, era un somni! L’arbre és a l’Odenwald, i jo sóc a Suïssa, aquí hi ha molta neu, tan freda, tan freda, que m’esquinça el cor!
