Einsam wandelt dein Freund im Frühlingsgarten,
Mild vom lieblichen Zauberlicht umflossen,
Das durch wankende Blüthenzweige zittert,
Adelaide!

In der spiegelnden Fluth, im Schnee der Alpen,
In des sinkenden Tages [Goldgewölken]1,
Im Gefilde der Sterne stralt dein Bildniß,
Adelaide!

Abendlüftchen im zarten Laube flüstern,
Silberglöckchen des Mais im Grase säuseln,
Wellen rauschen und Nachtigallen flöten:
Adelaide!

Einst, o Wunder! entblüht, auf meinem Grabe,
Eine Blume der Asche meines Herzens;
Deutlich schimmert auf jedem Purpurblättchen:
Adelaide!

Adelaide
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
All alone, friend, I wander in Spring's gardens
Soft encircled with lights of glowing magic
As they quiver through swaying, blooming branches --
Adelaide!

In the mirroring brooklet, in snow on the mountains
In the golden clouds of dying daylight
In the star-filled heaven shines your image! --
Adelaide!

Breezes whisper to tender leaves of evening
Silver May-bells chime and ring in the grasses
Waves are murmuring, and nightingales are chanting --
Adelaide!

Look! Such wonder! There, sprouting 'round my grave-bed
Lovely flower from (the) ashes of my heart!
Brightly shining on every purple leaflet --
Adelaide!
