Das klingt so starr und frostig;
Die Lieb ist hin, der Lenz ist fort,
Mein Herz, werd' mir nicht rostig.

Trompete sieht mich traurig an,
Mit Flor ist sie umhangen;
Sie haben den lustigen Fiedelmann
In Käfig eingefangen.

Die schwere Zeit, die schwere Noth
Sank lastend auf ihn nieder,
Muß spielen um sein täglich Brod --
Verstummt sind seine Lieder.

Der einst, die Zither leicht im Arm,
Sang an des Rheines Welle,
Schlägt jetzt den Takt, -- daß Gott erbarm!
In der Sistin'schen Kapelle.

Al servei militar! – Al servei! Oh maligna paraula
que sona tan rígida i freda;
acabats l’amor i la primavera,
oh cor meu, no se’m rovellis.

La trompeta m’esguarda tristament
amb un crespó està penjada;
Capturaren l’alegre violinista
i el ficaren en una gàbia.

Els temps difícils, la terrible fretura,
davallaren feixucs al seu damunt,
hagué de tocar per guanyar-se el pa de cada dia –
emmudiren les seves cançons.

El qui una vegada, amb la cítara al braç,
cantà a les ones del Rin,
