Willkommen, klare Sommernacht, die auf betauten Fluren liegt! Gegrüßt mir, goldne Sternenpracht, die spielend sich im Weltraum wiegt! Das Urgebirge um mich her ist schweigend, wie mein Nachtgebet; weit hinter ihm hör' ich das Meer im Geist und wie die Brandung geht. Ich höre einen Flötenton, den mir die Luft von Westen bringt indes herauf im Osten schon des Tages leise Ahnung dringt. Ich sinne, wo in weiter Welt jetzt sterben mag ein Menschenkind - und ob vielleicht den Einzug hält das viel ersehnte Heldenkind. Doch wie im dunklen Erdental ein unergründlich Schweigen ruht, ich fühle mich so leicht zumal und wie die Welt so still und gut. Der letzte leise Schmerz und Spott verschwindet aus des Herzens Grund; es ist, als tät' der alte Gott mir endlich seinen Namen kund.

Sois la bienvenue, nuit d'été limpide, qui s'étend sur la campagne couverte de rosée ! Je te salue, splendeur des étoiles d'or qui par jeu se berce dans l'espace infini ! La montagne originelle qui m'entoure est silencieuse, comme ma prière dans la nuit ; bien loin au-delà j'entends en imagination la mer et son ressac. J'entends le son d'une flûte que m'apporte le vent d'Ouest, cependant qu'à l'Est pointent déjà les doux prémices du jour. Je me demande où, dans quelle contrée lointaine, un être humain est en train de mourir à cet instant, ou si, peut-être, un jeune héros plein d'ardeur y voit le jour. Cependant, comme dans une sombre vallée, un silence insondable règne, je me sens comme en apesanteur et, à l'image du monde, paisible et bienveillant. L'ultime petite douleur ou vexation disparaît du fond de mon cœur ; c'est comme si Dieu le Père me révélait enfin son Nom.
