Je suis allongé dans une prairie verte, Près de la rive d'un ruisseau clair ; Les ombres des aulnes rafraîchissaient Le feu de mes joues brûlantes. Je pensais à ceci et à cela, Et je rêvais, doucement troublé, À tant de biens, à tant de beautés Que ce monde ne donne pas. Et regarde ! Du bosquet flotte Une jeune fille, claire comme le soleil ; Un voile blanc s'agite Autour de ses cheveux châtains. Autour de ses yeux humides et brillants Flottait un bleu éthéré, Ses cils mouillés scintillaient De perles de rosée de tristesse. Un sourire triste jouait Autour de sa bouche douce. Elle frissonna, elle tremblait ! Ses yeux pleins de larmes, Son regard plein de désir d'amour, Comme je l'ai dit, me cherchait. Qui serait, comme moi, si imaginatif, Serait si heureux, comme moi ! Je me levais pour l'embrasser ! Et hélas, elle recula d'un pas, Je vis qu'elle blêmissait vite, Et son regard devint plus triste. Elle me regardait avec tant de ferveur, Elle me fit un geste de la main, Vers le haut, pensivement, Vers le ciel et disparut. Adieu, adieu, apparition ! Adieu, je te connais bien Et le sens de ton signe Je le comprends, comme je dois...
