La musique apaise, enchante et délie Des choses d'en bas : Bercez ma douleur ; je vous en supplie, Ne lui parlez pas. Je suis las des mots, je suis las d'entendre Ce qui peut mentir ; J'aime mieux les sons qu'au lieu de comprendre Je n'ai qu'à sentir ; Une mélodie où l'âme se plonge Et qui, sans effort, Me fera passer du délire au songe, Du songe à la mort. Vous qui m'aiderez dans mon agonie, Ne me dites rien. Pour allégement un peu d'harmonie Me fera grand bien. Vous irez chercher ma pauvre nourrice Qui mène un troupeau, Et vous lui direz que c'est mon caprice, Au bord du tombeau, D'entendre chanter tout bas, de sa bouche, Un air d'autrefois, Simple et monotone, un doux air qui touche Avec peu de voix. Над гаснущим в томительном бреду Не надо слов — их гул нестроен; Немного музыки — и тихо я уйду Туда — где человек спокоен. Все чары музыки, вся нега оттого, Что цепи для нее лишь нити; Баюкайте печаль, но ничего Печали вы не говорите. Довольно слов — я им устал внимать, Распытывать, их чисты ль цели: Я не хочу того, что надо понимать, Мне надо, чтобы звуки пели… Мелодии, чтоб из одной волны Лились и пенились другие… Чтоб в агонию убегали сны, Несла в могилу агония… Над гаснущим в томительном плену Не надо слов, — их гул нестроен, Но если я под музыку усну, Я знаю: будет сон спокоен. Найдите няню старую мою: У ней пасти стада еще есть силы; Вы передайте ей каприз мой на краю Моей зияющей могилы. Пускай она меня потешит, спев Ту песню, что давно певала; Мне сердце трогает простой ее напев, Хоть там и пенья мало.
