Mein ist der unfruchtbare Weg, Den Sorg' und Mühe trat. Doch weil' ich gern mit stillem Weh' In froher Menschen Schwarm, Und wünsche jedem guten Tag, So herzlich und so warm. O reicher Gott! Du ließest doch Nicht ganz mich freudenleer, Ein süßer Trost für alle Welt Ergießt sich himmelher. Noch steigt in jedem Dörflein ja Dein heilig Haus empor. Je suis un pauvre malheureux, toujours tout seul je vais. Avoir un jour de bien bonheur ! un seul ! si je pouvais ! Chez mon bon père encor enfant, qu'heureux était mon sort ! L'amer chagrin devint mon lot, le jour qui vit sa mort. Du riche, hélas ! je vois fleurir les champs et les jardins. L'aride route est seule à moi, que foulent les chagrins. Parmi ces gens heureux et gais je cache ma douleur et dis à tous un doux bonjour, mais là, de si bon cœur. Tu m'as donné mes joies pourtant, bon Dieu, si bon, si doux, tu verses tes consolations du hat du ciel sur nous. Dans chaque bourg s'élève encor ton temple avec la croix ; les chants des chœurs et l'orgue font pour tous sonner leurs voix. Soleil, étoiles, lune aussi luisaient encor pour moi, et quand résonne l'Angelus, seigneur, je parle à toi. Aux bons ta porte doit s'ouvrir un jour, oh ! n'est ce pas ? Vêtu de blanc, alors j'irai m'assoir à ton repas.
