Ich bin [so gar ein]1 armer Mann Und gehe ganz allein. Ich möchte wohl nur einmal noch Recht frohen Mutes sein. In meiner lieben Eltern Haus War ich ein frohes Kind, Der bitt're Kummer ist mein Teil, Seit sie begraben sind. Der Reichen Gärten seh' ich blühn, Ich seh' die goldne Saat. Mein ist der unfruchtbare Weg, Den Sorg' und Mühe trat. Doch weil' ich gern mit stillem Weh' In froher Menschen Schwarm, Und wünsche jedem guten Tag, So herzlich und so warm. O reicher Gott! Du ließest doch Nicht ganz mich freudenleer, Ein süßer Trost für alle Welt Ergießt sich himmelher. Noch steigt in jedem Dörflein ja Dein heilig Haus empor. Die Orgel und der Chorgesang Ertönet jedem Ohr. Noch leuchtet Sonne, Mond und Stern So liebevoll auch mir, Und [wann]2 die Abendglocke hallt, Da red' ich, Herr, mit Dir. Je ne suis qu'un pauvre homme Et je vais tout seul. Je voudrais encore juste une fois Avoir droit à être de joyeuse humeur. Dans la maison de mes chers parents J'étais un enfant joyeux, Un amer chagrin est mon lot, Depuis qu'ils sont enterrés. Je vois fleurir les riches jardins, Je vois les moissons dorées. Mon chemin est stérile, Pavé de peine et de fatigue. Pourtant j'aime à être, avec ma douleur muette, Au milieu de la joyeuse foule des gens Et je souhaite à chacun le bonjour, De tout cœur et chaleureusement. Ô dieu tout puissant ! Tu ne me laisses quand même pas Tout à fait sans joie, Une douce consolation pour le monde entier Se déverse du ciel jusqu'ici. Oui, dans chaque petit village s'élève encore Vers le ciel ta sainte maison. Les orgues et le chant des chœurs Éclatent aux oreilles de chacun. Le soleil, la lune et les étoiles M'éclairent toujours avec amour, Et lorsque la cloche du soir retentit, Alors, Seigneur, je parle avec Toi. Un jour, pour chaque homme bon, s'ouvrira Ton grand temple de la joie, Alors je viendrai en habits de fête Et m'assiérai à ta table.
