by Hugo Hofmann, Edler von Hofmannsthal (1874 - 1929)
Translation by M. Havlenové

Die Beiden
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG ENG ENG FRE ITA
Sie trug den Becher in der Hand
-- Ihr Kinn und Mund glich seinem Rand --
So leicht und sicher war ihr Gang,
Kein Tropfen aus dem Becher sprang.

So leicht und fest war seine Hand:
Er ritt auf einem jungen Pferde
Und mit nachlässiger Gebärde
Erzwang er, daß es zitternd stand.

Jedoch wenn er aus ihrer Hand
Den leichten Becher nehmen sollte,
So war es beiden [allzu]1 schwer:
Denn beide bebten sie so sehr,
Daß keine Hand die andre fand,
Und dunkler Wein am Boden rollte.

Dva
Language: Czech (Čeština)  after the German (Deutsch)
Šla, nesouc pohár v dlani jen
– jak její rty byl vykrojen –
tak lehká a tak jistá byla,
že ani kapky neulila.

Tak silnou, pevnou ruku měl,
na mladém, bujném koni jel
a letmým stiskem koleny
ho přiměl, by stál, zpěněný.

Když ale lehký pohár měl
vzít do své dlaně z její dlaně,
tu těžký oběma byl rázem:
chvěla se ona, on se chvěl,
jich ruce míjely se maně
a temné víno teklo na zem
