Sie trug den Becher in der Hand
-- Ihr Kinn und Mund glich seinem Rand --
So leicht und sicher war ihr Gang,
Kein Tropfen aus dem Becher sprang.

So leicht und fest war seine Hand:
Er ritt auf einem jungen Pferde
Und mit nachlässiger Gebärde
Erzwang er, daß es zitternd stand.

Jedoch wenn er aus ihrer Hand
Den leichten Becher nehmen sollte,
So war es beiden [allzu]1 schwer:

Denn beide bebten sie so sehr,
Daß keine Hand die andre fand,
Und dunkler Wein am Boden rollte.

She bore the chalice in full grace
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
She bore the chalice in full grace
--Its rim was level with her face--
Her pace was light, secure and still,
No droplet from the cup did spill.

His hand, it was so firm and light;
He rode upon a youthful horse,
With casual gesture stayed its course,
Restrained it, quivering, from its flight.

And yet, when from her hand he sought
The chalice in his hand to hold,
The burden was for both too great:

For both were trembling in such state
That neither hand the other caught
And, on the ground, the dark wine rolled.
