Note: some catalogs indicate the poet of this text is F. A. Leo, but in his Gedichte he translates this poem beginning "Du Abendgruss, du Glockenklang,/ Wie manches Lied singt dein Gesang". So this translation is likely to be by someone else.

Es war ein alter König,
sein Herz war schwer, sein [Haupt]1 war grau;
der arme alte König,
er nahm eine junge Frau.

Es war ein [schöner]2 Page,
blond war sein [Haupt]3, leicht war sein Sinn;
er trug die [seid'ne]4 Schleppe
der jungen Königin.

Kennst du das alte Liedchen?
Es klingt so süß, es klingt so trüb!
Sie mußten beide sterben,
sie hatten sich viel zu lieb.

  Schon durch das stille Thal,
Da saßen wir zusammen
  Da droben wohl hundertmal.

Und unten war's so stille
  Im Lande weit und breit,
Nur über uns die Linde
  Rauscht' durch die Einsamkeit.

Was gehn die Glocken heute,
  Als ob ich weinen müßt'?
Die Glocken, die bedeuten
  Daß mein Lieb' gestorben ist!

Ich wollt', ich läg' begraben,
  Und über mir rauschte weit
Die Linde jeden Abend
