1. Der Zauberkreis

Was zieht zu deinem Zauberkreise
Mich unwillkürlich hin?
Was seufzt in meinem Busen leise,
Daß ich nicht glücklich bin?
Mein Herz fängt stärker an zu schlagen,
Wenn dich mein Blick ersieht;
Ich wag' es kaum mir selbst zu sagen,
Was hin zu dir mich zieht.

Wohin ich flieh' mit meinem Kummer,
Verfolgt mich auch dein Bild;
Es schwebt mir vor, wenn matter Schlummer
Mein tränend Aug' umhüllt,
Es folgt mir nach im Weltgewühle,
Wie in der Einsamkeit.
Ich fühl's, nur an des Lebens Ziele
Find' ich Zufriedenheit.

Bald möcht' ich vor dir niederknien
Und alles dir gesteh'n,
Bald möcht' ich vor dir zitternd fliehen
Und nie dich wieder sehn'!
Ich seufz' und weine laut,
Wenn leise der Warnung Stimme spricht:
"Entflieh' aus ihrem Zauberkreise!"
Ich will, und kann es nicht

Es war, als hätte der Himmel,
Die Erde still geküßt,
Daß sie im Blütenschimmer
Von ihm nun träumen müßt.

Die Luft ging durch die Felder,
Die Ähren wogten sacht,
Es rauschten leis die Wälder,
So sternklar war die Nacht.

Und meine Seele spannte
Weit ihre Flügel aus,
Flog durch die stillen Lande,
Als flöge sie nach Haus.

Ich folge dir, wohin mein Weg auch gehe,
du bist der liebe Gott, du leitest gut.
Ich folg', obgleich ich keinen Ausgang sehe;
du bist ein Gott der Macht, ich habe Mut.

Ich glaube dir! Mit kindlichem Vertrauen
hör' ich dein Wort, das im Gewissen spricht.
Die Hoffnung lebt, es schwinden Nacht und Grauen,
die bange Finsternis wird mir zum Licht.

So nimm mich hin, ich will mit ganzer Seele
dein eigen sein im Leben und im Tod.
Du bist mein höchstes Gut, und ewig wähle
ich keinen ander'n Freund als dich, mein Gott!

Im Norden auf kahler Höh';
Ihn schläfert; mit weißer Decke
Umhüllen ihn Eis und Schnee.

Er träumt von einer Palme,
Die fern im Morgenland,
Einsam und schweigend trauert
Auf brennender Felsenwand.
