Du bist, mein fernes Tal,
Verzaubert und versunken. 
Oft hast du mir in Not und Qual
Empor aus deinem Schattenland gewunken
Und deine Mädchenaugen aufgetan,
Daß ich entzückt in kurzem Wahn
Mich ganz zu dir zurück verlor. 

O dunkles Tor, 
O dunkle Todesstunde, 
Komm du heran, daß ich gesunde 
Und daß aus dieses Lebens Leere
Ich heim zu meinen Träumen kehre!

Nun blüht die Welt nicht mehr für mich,
Nicht mir ruft Wind und Vogelschrei.
Mein Weg ward schmal, ich geh vorbei,
Kein Freund begleitet mich.

Und jeder Blick ins frohe Tal,
Wo meine Jugend heimisch war,
Ist nun für mich Gefahr
Und bittre Qual.

Und stieg ich nieder noch einmal,
Zu stillen meines Heimwehs Not,
So stünde dort, wie überall
An meinem Weg der Tod.

Sei nicht traurig, bald ist es Nacht,
Da sehn wir über dem bleichen Land
Den kühlen Mond, wie er heimlich lacht
Und ruhen Hand in Hand.
 
Sei nicht traurig, bald kommt die Zeit,
Da haben wir Ruh. Unsre Kreuzlein stehen
Am hellen Straßenrande zu zweit,
Und es regnet und schneit,
Und die Winde kommen und gehen.

Es ist kein Tag so streng und heiß,
Des sich der Abend nicht erbarmt,
Und den nicht gütig, lind und leis
Die mütterliche Nacht umarmt.

Auch Du, mein Herz, getröste dich,
So heiß dein Sehnen dich bedrängt,
Die Nacht ist nah, die mütterlich
In sanfte Arme dich empfängt.

Es wird ein Bett, es wird ein Schrein
Dem ruhelosen Wandergast
Von fremder Hand bereitet sein,
Darin du endlich Ruhe hast.

Vergiß es nicht, mein wildes Herz,
Und liebe sehnlich jede Lust
Und liebe auch den bittern Schmerz,
Eh du für immer ruhen mußt.

Wie haben sie dich, Baum, verschnitten,
Wie stehst du fremd und sonderbar!
Wie hast du hundertmal gelitten,
Bis nichts in dir als Trotz und Wille war!
Ich bin wie du, mit dem verschnittnen,
Gequälten Leben brach ich nicht
Und tauche täglich aus durchlittnen
Roheiten neu die Stirn ins Licht.
Was in mir weich und zart gewesen,
Hat mir die Welt zu Tod gehöhnt,
Doch unzerstörbar ist mein Wesen,
Ich bin zufrieden, bin versöhnt,
Geduldig neue Blätter treib ich
Aus Ästen hundertmal zerspellt,
Und allem Weh zu Trotze bleib ich
Verliebt in die verrückte Welt.

Die so viel Ungesagtes sagt,
Hab ich dich jemals dann gefragt,
Ob du mich liebst?

An dem Gedanken bin ich oft erwacht
Daß jetzt ein Schiff geht durch die kühle Nacht
Und Meere sucht und nach Gestaden fährt,
Nach denen heiße Sehnsucht mich verzehrt.
Daß jetzt an Orten, die kein Seemann kennt,
Ein rotes Nordlicht ungesehen brennt.

Daß jetzt ein schöner fremder Frauenarm
Sich liebesuchend preßt in Kissen weiß und warm.
Daß einer, der zum Freund mir war bestimmt,
Jetzt fern im Meer ein dunkles Ende nimmt.
Daß meine Mutter, die mich nimmer kennt,
Vielleicht im Schlaf jetzt meinen Namen nennt.
