Denn es gehet dem Menschen wie dem Vieh, wie dies stirbt, so stirbt er auch; und haben alle einerlei Odem; und der Mensch hat nichts mehr denn das Vieh: denn es ist alles eitel. Es fährt alles an einen Ort; es ist alles von Staub gemacht, und wird wieder zu Staub. Wer weiss, ob der Geist des Menschen aufwärts fahre, und der Odem des Viehes unterwärts unter die Erde fahre? Darum sahe ich, daß nichts bessers ist, denn dass der Mensch fröhlich sei in seiner Arbeit, denn das ist sein Teil. Denn wer will ihn dahin bringen, dass er sehe, was nach ihm geschehen wird?

Pues a los hombres les va como al ganado: como este muere, mueren ellos también, pues tienen el mismo aliento. El hombre no tiene más que el ganado, todo es vano. Todo va al mismo lugar, polvo eres y en polvo te convertirás. ¿Quién sabe si el espíritu de los hombres asciende y el aliento del ganado desciende, bajo la tierra? Por ello veo que es mejor que el hombre se afane en su trabajo, pues esa es su parte. ¿Quién querrá llevarle ahí donde pueda ver lo que habrá tras él?

Me volví y vi a los que sufren injusticias bajo este sol; ¡ved!, había lágrimas de los que sufren injusticias, que no tienen a nadie que les consuele, y los que causaban las injusticias eran tan poderosos que no podían tener a nadie que les consolara. Así alabé a los muertos que ya habían fallecido, los alabé más que a los vivos que aún tenían su vida. Y el que aún no es, es mejor que ambos y no se impregna de lo malo que ocurre bajo el sol.
