Dort vor [Mariä]2 heilig' Bild Sie betend niederkniet, Der Himmel hat ihr Herz erfüllt, Und alle Weltlust flieht: "O [Jungfrau]3 rein! Laß mich allein Dein eigen sein!" Alsbald [der Glocke dumpfer]4 Klang Die Betenden erweckt, Das Mägdlein wallt die Hall' entlang, Es weiß nicht, was es trägt; [Am Haupte]5 ganz Von Himmelsglanz Einen Lilienkranz. Mit Staunen [schauen]6 all' die Leut' Dies Kränzlein licht im Haar, Das Mägdlein aber wallt nicht weit, Tritt vor den Hochaltar: "Zur Nonne weiht Mich arme Maid! Stirb, Lieb' und Freud'!" [Gott, gib, daß dieses Mägdelein Ihr Kränzlein friedlich trag']7, Es ist die Herzallerliebste mein, Bleibt's bis zum jüngsten Tag. Sie weiß es nicht, Mein Herz zerbricht, Stirb, Lieb' und Licht!

Te Augsburg staat een deftig huis, Dichtbij de oude dom. Daaruit komt, als de zon verrijst, Een meisje vroom en jong; Gezang weerklinkt, Ter kerke dringt De lieve gezwind. Daar voor Maria's heil'genbeeld Knielt biddend zij terneer, De hemel heeft haar hart vervuld, Zij kent geen aardse heer: "O Vrouwe rein, Laat als begijn Mij de1 uwe zijn!" Weldra roept 't donk're klokkenkoor De mensen naar 't gebed. Het meisje gaat de domkerk door Iets is haar opgezet: Om 't hoofdje danst Vol hemelglans Een leliënkrans. Verbijsterd ziet daar iedereen De lichtkrans in haar haar, Het meisje echter schrijdt sereen, Treedt voor het hoogaltaar: "Tot non wijd mij, Mij past een pij, Sterf, liefde, jij!" God, geef dat dit lief meisje In vrede leven mag, Zij is mijn dierbaarste hartsvriendin, Blijft 't tot de jongste dag. Laat mij de druk, Mijn hart breekt stuk, Sterf, liefdesgeluk!

Mit eilenden Wolken der Vogel dort zieht Und singt in der Ferne ein heimatlich' Lied, So treibt es den Burschen durch Wälder und Feld, Zu gleichen der Mutter, der wandernden Welt. Vooruit! Nog gedronken de fonk'lende wijn! Vaarwel nu, geliefden! Snel weg moet ik zijn! Vaarwel nu, mijn bergen, mijn ouderlijk huis! Het is onweerstaanbaar, ik moet nu op reis. De zon, zie, die blijft aan de hemel niet staan, Zij moet over landen en zeeën heen gaan. De golf ook zich hecht niet aan 't eenzame strand, De stormen, zij razen met kracht over 't land. De vogel trekt weg, inderhaast, als de wolk, En zingt ver weg elders van herkomst en volk, Zo drijft iets de jong're om, ver over d' aard, Te zijn als zijn moeder, de wereld vol vaart. Daar groeten hem vogels, bekend, boven zee, Zij vlogen van 't veld in hun vaderland mee; Daar geuren de bloemen weer om hem, vertrouwd, Hen dreven de winden het land uit, aloud. De vogels, zij kennen zijn thuis tot en met, De bloemen, die plant hij als liefdesboeket, En liefde, die volgt hem, loopt mee aan zijn hand: Zo raakt hij geworteld in 't allerverst land.

Jetzt sollst du mir gefüllet sein Mondhell mit Gold der deutschen Reben! In deiner Tiefe heil'gen Schein Schau' ich hinab mit frommem Beben. Was ich erschau' in deinem Grund Ist nicht Gewöhnlichen zu nennen. Doch wird mir klar zu dieser Stund', Wie nichts den Freund vom Freund kann trennen. Auf diesen Glauben, Glas so hold! Trink' ich dich aus mit hohem Mute. Klar spiegelt sich der Sterne Gold, Pokal, in deinem teuren Blute! Still geht der Mond das Tal entlang, Ernst tönt die mitternächt'ge Stunde. Leer steht das Glas! Wat mij al kijkend wordt bekend Is aan filisters niet te duiden. Toch wordt mij duid'lijk dit moment Dat niets een vriend van 'n vriend kan scheiden. Ik drink je leeg, vol goede moed, Op dit geloof, o glas, al toostend. Klaar spiegelt in jouw kostbaar bloed, Bokaal, het sterrengoud zich, troostend! Stil schuift de maan door 't dal, ten troon, Ernst kleurt te middernacht de slagen. Leeg staat het glas; de heil'ge toon Wordt nog door het kristal gedragen.
