Der Wind spielt mit der Wetterfahne Auf meines schönen Liebchens Haus. Da dacht' ich schon in meinem Wahne, Sie pfiff' den armen Flüchtling aus. Er hätt' es eher bemerken sollen, Des Hauses aufgestecktes Schild, So hätt' er nimmer suchen wollen Im Haus' ein treues Frauenbild. Der Wind spielt drinnen mit den Herzen, Wie auf dem Dach, nur nicht so laut. Was fragen sie nach meinen Schmerzen? Ihr Kind ist eine reiche Braut.

Tuuli leikittelee tuuliviirillä kauniin rakastettuni talon katolla. Houreisessa mielessäni kuvittelin, että se vinkunallaan ajaisi pakolaisraukan pois. Olisihan minun pikemminkin pitänyt huomata, millainen viiri talon katolla pyörii, eihän talosta sellaisen häilyväisen alta kannata uskollista naista etsiä. Tuuli leikittelee sydänten sisällä niinkuin katollakin, muttei niin äänekkäästi. Mitäpä he minun tuskistani piitttaavat? Heidän tyttönsähän on rikas morsian.

Turhaan etsin lumesta hänen askeltensa jälkiä, kun hän käsivarteeni nojaten kulki vihreän kedon poikki. Minä tahdon suudella maata, tunkeutua jään ja lumen läpi kuumilla kyynelilläni, kunnes näen maan, jolla hän kulki. Mistä löytäisin edes yhden kukan, mistä löytäisin vihreää ruohoa? Kukathan ovat kuolleet ja nurmikko näyttää niin haalistuneelta. Enkö siis voi saada mitää muistoa hänestä mukaani täältä? Kun tuskani laantuvat, kuka kertoo minulle hänestä? Kaivon luona, portin edessä seisoo vanha lehmus; Sen varjossa minä minä uneksin niin monta suloista unta. Sen kuoreen piirsin niin monta rakastavaa sanaa; ilossa ja tuskassa jokin aina veti minua sen luokse. Tänäänkin tieni kulki sen ohitse sydänyöllä, ja vaikka oli valmiiksi pimeää, minä suljin silmäni. Ja lehmuksen oksat suhisivat ikäänkuin huutaen minulle: ”Tule tänne, ystävä, täältä sinä löydät rauhasi!” Mutta kylmät tuulet puhalsivat suoraan kasvoihini; hattukin lensi päästä, mutten kääntynyt takaisin. Jalkapohjieni alla polttaa vaikka kävelenkin jään ja lumen päällä. En tahtoisi pysähtyä hengähtämään, niin kauan kuin kaupungin tornit näkyvät. Olen törmännyt jokaiseen kiveen, niin kiiruusti riensin pois kaupungista; Ilkeät varikset tahrivat hattuni jokaisen talon kohdalla. Miten toisin otitkaan minut vastaan, sinä häilyväinen kaupunki! Kirkkaaksi pestyillä ikkunoillasi lauloivat leivonen ja satakieli kilpaa. Pyöreät lehmukset kukkivat, kirkkaat virrat solisivat raikkaasti, ja voi, kaksi tytönsilmää säteili. – Silloin sinä olit myytyä miestä, ystäväni! In die tiefsten Felsengründe Lockte mich ein Irrlicht hin: Wie ich einen Ausgang finde, Liegt nicht schwer mir in dem Sinn. Bin gewohnt das irre Gehen, 'S führt ja jeder Weg zum Ziel: Unsre Freuden, unsre Leiden, Alles eines Irrlichts Spiel! Durch des Bergstroms trockne Rinnen Wind' ich ruhig mich hinab - Jeder Strom wird's Meer gewinnen, Jedes Leiden auch sein Grab.

Miten väsynyt olen, huomaan vasta, kun käyn levolle: vaeltaminen piti minut pirteänä autiolla tiellä. Jalat eivät pyytäneet taukoa, oli liian kylmä jäädä seisomaan, selkä ei tuntenut painoa, myrsky auttoi minua eteenpäin. Miilunpolttajan ahtaassa majassa löysin yösijan; mutta jäseneni eivät pysty lepäämään: niiden haavat polttavat niin pahasti. Hautausmaalle on matkani minut kuljettanut; tänne voisin majoittua, niin olen mielessäni ajatellut. Te vihreät hautaseppeleet olette varmaan merkkejä, jotka kutsuvat väsyneen vaeltajan vilpoisaan majataloon. Ovatko tässäkin talossa kaikki huoneet jo täynnä? Olen kaatumaisillani väsymyksestä, olen kuolettavasti haavoittunut. Voi armoton isäntä, käännytätkö sinäkin minut pois? Eteenpäin vain, eteenpäin, uskollinen matkasauvani!

Tuolla kylän takana seisoo kampiliiransoittaja jäykillä sormillaan hän pyörittää kampeaan parhaansa mukaan. Jäisellä tiellä hän avojaloin huojuu sinne ja tänne ja hänen pieni almulautasena pysyy aina vain tyhjänä. Kukaan ei välitä kuunnella häntä, kukaan ei ole häntä näkevinään, vain koirat ärisevät vanhuksen ympärillä. Ja hän hän antaa kaiken mennä menojaan, vääntää kampeaan, eikä liira vaikene hetkeksikään. Merkillinen vanhus, pitäisikö minun lähteä mukaasi? Tahtoisitko säestää laulujani pyörittämällä kampeasi?
