Mein Sohn, wo willst du hin so spät?
Geh' nicht zum Wald hinaus,
Die Schwester find'st du nimmermehr,
O bleib' bei mir im Haus!

Da draußen ist's so kalt, so rauh,
Und heftig weht der Wind;
Bist ganz allein im weiten Wald,
O bleib' bei mir, mein Kind!

O Mutter, Mutter, laß mich zieh'n,
Trockne die [Trän']1 im Blick,
Die Schwester find' ich ganz gewiß
Und bring' sie uns zurück.

Bis ich sie find', ist doch kein' Rast,
Ist doch kein' Ruhe hier;
Den Schnee und Wind bin ich gewohnt,
Bald kehr' ich heim zu dir.

Die Mutter sah ihm lange nach,
Er ging zum Wald hinaus;
Der Wind ward still, die Nacht verging,
Doch [er kehrt' nicht zum Haus]2.

[Und der]3 Schnee zerschmolz, der Wind verweht',
Kam wieder Sonnenschein
Und Blüt' und Blätter überall:
Die Mutter [blieb]4 allein.

Winterlied
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)  after the German (Deutsch)
Mijn zoon, waar wil je heen zo laat?
Ga niet naar 't bos van huis.
Je zuster vind je nimmer meer,
O blijf bij mij hier thuis!

Daar buiten is 't zo koud, zo ruw,
En hevig waait de wind;
Je bent alleen in 't grote bos,
O blijf bij mij, mijn kind!

O moeder, moeder, laat mij gaan,
Droog nu die traan maar vlug.
Mijn zusje vind ik heel beslist,
Ik breng haar hier terug.

Tot ik haar vind, is hier geen rust,
Is hier geen kalmte meer;
Aan sneeuw en wind ben ik gewend,
Gauw kom ik naar je weer.

De moeder keek heel lang hem na,
Hij ging naar 't bos van huis;
De wind werd stil, de nacht verliep,
Maar hij kwam niet meer thuis.

De sneeuw smolt weg, de wind hield op,
En ook de zon weer scheen.
't Was bloei en blaad'ren overal:
De moeder bleef alleen.
