Da zeucht er hinunter, der junge Knab, Es braust ihm zu Füßen der Strom hinab, Es saust ihm zu Haupte der schwarze Wald, Und die Sonne versinket in Wolken bald. Und er kommt ans finstere Räuberhaus, Eine holde Jungfrau schauet heraus: "O wehe, du bist so ein junger Knab, Was kommst du ins Tal des Todes herab?" Aus dem Tor die mördrische Rotte bricht, Die Jungfrau decket ihr Angesicht, Sie stoßen ihn nieder, sie rauben sein Gut, Sie lassen ihn liegen in seinem Blut. "O weh, wie dunkel! keine Sonne, kein Stern! Wen ruf ich an? ist mein Gott so fern? Ha! Jungfrau dort im himmlischen Schein, Nimm auf meine Seel in die Hände dein!"

Il en va de ta vie, jeune garçon ! » « Mon Dieu dans le ciel est ma lumière, Il ne m'abandonnera pas dans la sombre forêt. » Le jeune garçon alors y descendit, Le torrent mugit à ses pieds La noire forêt souffle sur sa tête Et bientôt le soleil disparaît dans les nuages. Et il arrive à la sombre maison des bandits, Une gracieuse pucelle regarde dehors : « Ô malheur, tu es un si jeune garçon, Pourquoi descends-tu dans la vallée de la mort ? » La porte vomit une bande assassine, La pucelle se couvre le visage, Ils l'abattent, ils volent ses biens, Le laissent gisant dans son sang. « Ô malheur, quelle obscurité ! Pas de soleil, pas d'étoile ! Qui appeler à l'aide ? Mon Dieu est-il si loin ? Oh ! Vierge qui es dans la clarté céleste, Accueilles mon âme dans tes mains ! »
