Окончен праздный, шумный день;
Людская жизнь, умолкнув, дремлет.
Все тихо. Майской ночи тень 
Столицу спящую объемлет.

Но сон от глаз моих бежит,
И при лучах иной денницы
Воображение вертит
Годов утраченных страницы.

Как будто вновь, вдыхая яд
Весенних, страстных сновиденний,
В душе я воскрешаю ряд
Надежд, порывов, заблуждений...

Увы, то призраки одни!
Мне скучно с мертвой их толпою,
И шум их старой болтовни
Уже не властен надо мною.

Лишь тень одна из всех теней
Явилась мне, дыша любовью,
И, верный друг минувших дней,
Склонилась тихо к изголовью.

И смело отдал ей одной
Всю душу я в слезе безмолвной,
Никем незримой, счастья полной...
В слезе, давно хранимой мной!

La vie humaine est devenue silencieuse, endormie.
Tout est calme. L'ombre de la nuit de mai
Embrasse la capitale qui dort.

Mais le sommeil s'enfuit  de mes yeux,
Et sur les rayons de la nouvelle étoile du matin
Mon imagination feuillette
Les pages de l'année passée.

Comme si à nouveau respirant le poison
Printanier des rêves passionnés,
Je ressuscitais dans mon âme le flot
Des espoirs, des impulsions, des illusions...

Hélas, ce ne sont que des fantômes !
Je suis las de ces foules mortes,
Et le bruit de leurs vieux ragots
N'a plus de pouvoir sur moi.

Seule une ombre, la seule de toutes les ombres,
M'est apparue respirant l'amour,
Et comme un fidèle ami des jours passés
S'est penchée doucement sur mon lit.

Et je lui ai rendue à elle seule
Toute mon âme dans une larme silencieuse,
Invisible à tous, pleine de bonheur...
En une larme, longtemps retenue en moi !
