Poka ne trebuet poėta
k svjaščennoj žertve Apollon,
v zabotach suetnogo sveta
on malodušno pogružen;

molčit ego svjataja lira;
duša v kušaet chladnyj son,
i mež detej ničtožnych mira,
byt' možet, vsech ničtožnej on.

No liš' božestvennyj glagol
do slucha čutkogo kosnetsja,
duša poėta vstrepenetsja,
kak probudivšijsja orël.

Toskuet  on v zabavach mira,
ljudskoj čuždaetsja molvy,
k nogam narodnogo kumira
ne klonit gordoj golovy;

bežit on, dikij i surovyj,
i zvukov, i smjaten'ja poln,
na berega pustynnych voln,
v široko-šumnye dubrovy...
