Wohin? ...Wohin? -- Ich saß beim Mahl, Erdmännlein durchlärmten den Hochzeitssaal, sie brachten mir ein Becherlein, darinnen glühte Blut, statt Wein: den Becher musst' ich trinken. Und als ich getrunken den Hochzeitstrank, da ward mir so enge die Brust, so bang, da griff hinein eine eiserne Hand -- da ward mir das ganze Herze verbrannt. [Das]1 Herze muss ich kühlen! Ein Krönlein lag auf dem Hochzeitstisch -- zwischen roten Korallen ein Silberfisch -- das zog ich heran, das setzt' ich mir auf; nun bin ich des [Wassermannes]2 Braut. Mein Herze musst' ich kühlen... Es fielen drei Äpfel in meinen Schoß, weiß, gold und rosenrot -- : das war die Hochzeitsgabe. Ich aß den weißen und wurde bleich, ich aß den gold'nen und wurde reich, zuletzt den rosenroten. Weiß, bleich und rosenrot saß ein [Mägdlein]3 -- und das war tot. Wassermann! thu [nun]4 auf die Thür! Die tote Braut, die bring' ich dir. Zwischen Silberfischlein, Molch und Gestein ins Tiefe, Dunkle, Kühle hinein... O, du verbranntes Herze!

Kuda? Kuda? Šël pir goroj, I gnomov nosilsja šumlivyj roj. I vot prinosjat čašu mne: Tam ne vino, tam krov' na dne: eë ispit' dolžna ja. Liš' vypila svadebnyj kubok ja moj, stesnilosja serdce v toske nemoj. I grud' sdavilo v železnych tiskach, i serdce prožeg neizvedannyj strach. O pust' ostynet serdce! Venec, blestja, predo mnoj ležal: serebristaja rybka i krasnyj korall. Ego ja vzjala, i v kosy vplela: navek vodjanomu sebja obrekla. O pust' zastynet serdce. Upali mne v ruki tri divnych ploda, belyj, krasnyj, zolotoj: to byl podarok bračnyj. JA s"ela belyj rumjanec propal, a plod zolotoj bogatstvo mne dal; potom vzjala ja krasnyj. Vsja bledna sidela deva, bela, rumjana i mertva. Idu k tebe, vodjanoj, ja teper': otkroj neveste mertvoj dver'. I mež rybok srebristych, pod tinoj gustoj najdu ja cholod, mrak, pokoj. moe sgorelo serdce!
