Glücklich, wer hier stirbt wie die Vögel der Flur! sein Leib wird neben seinen Freunden ins Gras gebettet, unter Gesängen. Er schläft einen guten, roten Schlaf unter dem strahlenden Himmel. Alle, die ihn kannten, sind gekommen und bereiten ihm einen langen Abschied. An seinem Kreuz verweilen die weinenden Eltern, knieend, und seine Gebeine unter den Blumen werden von den Tränen getränkt. Jeder kann auf dem schwarzen Holz lesen, ob er jung war oder nicht und ihn mit aufrichtigem Bedauern beim Namen nennen. Wieviel unglücklicher sind die dran, die auf dem Meer sterben und sich unter den tiefen Fluten weit von ihrem geliebten Land entfernen! Ach, die Armen! Anstelle eines Grabtuchs haben sie nur die grünen Algen, in denen sie hin und herollen, unbekannt, nackt, mit weit aufgerissenen Augen.
