I Somrens drømmende Kvæld?
Alene, ene i Dalen trang!
Mon Længslen ej over Fjeld sig svang?

ich ging durch ein einsam Tal,
der Fels stand licht und die Sonne schwand,
der Fjord war blau und grün der Strand,
und Sommerlüfte
und Birkendüfte, 
und still das Land.

Ein schlankes Mädchen mit rotem Band
im gold'nen dicken Geflecht,
mit Strickzeug still auf der Hausflur sass,
die Ziegenherde am Felsen frass,
die tat sie hüten,
und Quellen glitten 
gelind durch's Gras.

Was träumte sie wohl, die schlanke Maid,
hinaus in die dämmernde Nacht?
Alleine, einsam! Ihr wird wohl bang?
Ob Sehnsucht wohl übern Fels sich schwang?
Horch, ferne Lieder!
Rings hallt es wieder 
wie Wehmutsklang.
