by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)
Translation by Carlyle Ferren MacIntyre (1890 - 1967)

Ich sehe seit einer Zeit
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  FRE
Ich sehe seit einer Zeit,
wie alles sich verwandelt.
Etwas steht auf und handelt
und tötet und tut Leid.

Von Mal zu Mal sind all
die Gärten nicht dieselben;
von den gilbenden zu der gelben
langsamem Verfall:
wie war der Weg mir weit.

Jetzt bin ich bei den leeren
und schaue durch alle Alleen.
Fast bis zu den fernen Meeren
kann ich den ernsten schweren
verwehrenden Himmel sehn.

End of Autumn
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I have seen for some time now
the change in everything.
Something arises and acts
and kills and brings suffering.

In the gardens now from day to day
is a change from green
to yellow and gray,
a slow dying-away :
how long my road has been.

Now I stand in this emptiness
and look down the rows of trees.
Almost to the distant sea
the foreboding earnestness
of the sky lies heavily.
