Addormentato in agguato lassù sta il vecchio cavaliere; Sopra scorrono scrosci di pioggia e il bosco stormisce attraverso il cancello. Incolta la barba e la chioma, diventati pietra il petto e il collare, siede da molti secoli lassù nell'eremo silenzioso. Fuori tutto è tranquillo e in pace, tutti sono scesi a valle, gli uccelli del bosco cantano solitari negli archi vuoti delle finestre. Un corteo nuziale passa laggiù sul Reno nella luce del sole, i musici suonano allegri, e la bella sposa, lei piange.
