Sovnet på vakt er den gamle ridderen der oppe; over ham går regnskurer, og skogen rasler gjennom gitteret. Med sammenvokst skjegg og hår og forstenete bryst og krøller, sitter han mange hundre år oppe i den stille cellen. Ute er det stille og fredelig, alle har flyttet ned i dalen, skogsfuglene synger ensomt i de tomme vinduspostene.
