Als voll Strahlen noch stand die Sonne,
wollt ich wiedersehn unsern Hain,
wo wir einstmals gingen zu zwein,
noch im Frühling, voll Liebeswonne.

Ich dachte mir: Auf diesem Weg,
da werde ich sie wieder finden,
dann gehn wir nochmal jenen Steg,
den Steg unter dem Laub der Linden.

Und ich sah den vertrauten Weg,
doch nirgends, nirgends war sie zu finden!
Und die Sonne erschien verblaßt.

O ihr schönen, wonnigen Stunden!

Seid ihr nun für immer entschwunden
und blieb nur das Weh und die Last?
