Auf dem Canal grande betten
Tief sich ein die Abendschatten,
Hundert dunkle Gondeln gleiten
Als ein flüsterndes Geheimnis.

Aber zwischen zwei Palästen
Glüht herein die Abendsonne,
Flammend wirft sie einen grellen
Breiten Streifen auf die Gondeln.

In dem purpurroten Lichte
Laute Stimmen, hell Gelächter,
Überredende Gebärden
Und das frevle Spiel der Augen.

Eine kleine, kurze Strecke
Treibt das Leben leidenschaftlich
Und erlischt im Schatten drüben
Als ein unverständlich Murmeln.

Les ombres du soir se couchent
Profondément sur le Grand Canal,
Cent gondoles noires glissent
Dans un chuchotement secret.

Cependant le soleil couchant
Brasille entre deux palais
Et flamboyant, jette un aveuglant
Et large rayon sur les gondoles.

Dans la lumière pourpre
Des voix hautes, des rires clairs,
Des gestes persuasifs
Et le jeu sacrilège des yeux.

La vie passionnément suit
Un petit et bref parcours,
Et s'éteint  là-haut, dans l'ombre,
En un murmure indéchiffrable.
