Wandle mit verhülltem Schritte
Durch den öden, finstern Wald:
Luna bricht durch Busch und Eichen,
Zephyr meldet ihren Lauf,
Und die Birken streun mit Neigen
Ihr den süßten Weihrauch auf.

Wie ergötz' ich mich im Kühlen
Dieser schönen Sommernacht!
O wie still [ist]¹ hier zu fühlen,
Was die Seele glücklich macht!
Läßt sich kaum die Wonne fassen,
Und doch wollt' ich, Himmel, dir
Tausend solcher Nächte lassen,
Gäb' mein Mädchen Eine mir.

La lune se réfracte à travers buissons et chênes
Le zéphyr annonce sa course

Pour elle l'encens le plus suave.

Comme est délicieuse la fraîcheur
De cette belle nuit d'été !
Ô comme le calme ici permet de ressentir
Ce qui rend l'âme heureuse !
Cette félicité se laisse tout juste appréhender,
Et pourtant, ô ciel, je pourrais
Te laisser mille pareilles nuits,
