‎Пока не требует поэта
К священной жертве Аполлон,
В заботах су́етного света
Он малодушно погружён;
Молчит его святая лира;
Душа вкушает хладный сон,
И меж детей ничтожных мира,
Быть может, всех ничтожней он.

‎Но лишь Божественный глагол
До слуха чуткого коснётся,
Душа поэта встрепенётся,
Как пробудившийся орёл.
Тоскует он в забавах мира,
Людской чуждается молвы,
К ногам народного кумира
Не кло́нит гордой головы;
Бежит он, дикий и суровый,
И звуков и смятенья полн,
На берега пустынных волн,
В широкошумные дубровы…

Tant que le poète n'est pas obligé
Par Apollon au saint sacrifice,
Dans les soucis du monde vain,
Il est lâchement englouti.
Sa lyre sainte est silencieuse ;
Son âme se nourrit d'un sommeil glacé ;
Et parmi les enfants misérables du monde
Il est peut-être le plus démuni.

Mais dès que la parole divine
Touche son ouïe sensible,
L'âme du poète sursaute,
Comme un aigle éveillé.
Il s'ennuie dans le monde des plaisirs,
Il est étranger au bruit humain,
Aux pieds de l'idole du peuple
Il ne courbe pas sa tête fière ;
Il s'enfuit, sauvage et sévère,
Dans la confusion, plein de sons,
Sur la rive aux vagues désolées,
Vers le bois de chênes toujours bruyant.
