Das war des Sommers schönster Tag,
Nun klingt er vor dem stillen Haus
In Duft und süßem Vogelschlag
Unwiederbringlich leise aus.
    
In dieser Stunde goldnen Born
Gießt schwelgerisch in roter Pracht
Der Sommer aus sein volles Horn
Und feiert seine letzte Nacht.

Laufeuchte Winde schweifen,
Nachtvögel hört man überm Ried
Mit schweren Flügeln streifen
Und fern im Dorf ein Fischerlied.

Aus niegewesenen Zeiten
Sind trübe Sagen angestimmt
Und Klagen um ewige Leiden;
Weh dem, der sie bei Nacht vernimmt!

Laß klagen, Kind, laß rauschen!
Rings ist die Welt vom Leide schwer.
Wir wollen den Vögeln lauschen
Und auch dem Lied vom Dorfe her.

O wie der Sturm so dunkel braust!
Wir neigen ängstlich und zerzaust
Uns tief vor seiner schauerlichen Macht
Und bleiben zitternd wach die ganze Nacht.

Wenn wir morgen noch leben werden,
O wie wird dann der Himmel tagen
Und warme Luft und Geläut von Herden
Selige Wellen über uns schlagen!

O reine, wundervolle Schau,
Wenn du aus Purpurrot und Gold
Dich ebnest friedvoll, ernst und hold,
Du leuchtendes Späthimmelblau!

Du mahnst an eine blaue See,

Eine rote Sonne liegt
In des Teiches tiefen Fluten,
Ein verirrter Falter fliegt
Über Schilf und Weidenruten.

Alles, was mein Herz verlor,
Jugendmut und Kinderfrieden,
Schlummert hier im gelben Rohr,
Einsam, stumm, weltabgeschieden.

Wie ein breites Abendrot
Liegt mein Leben und mein Leiden,
Ruhig wie ein dunkles Boot
Meine Träume drüber gleiten.

Über meinen wilden Sinn
Ist ein Frieden ausgegossen;
Was ich war und was ich bin,
Ist in einen Traum zerflossen.

Träumte ich lang
Von deinen Bäumen und blauen Lüften,
