Dort vor [Mariä]2 heilig' Bild Sie betend niederkniet, Der Himmel hat ihr Herz erfüllt, Und alle Weltlust flieht: "O [Jungfrau]3 rein! Laß mich allein Dein eigen sein!" Alsbald [der Glocke dumpfer]4 Klang Die Betenden erweckt, Das Mägdlein wallt die Hall' entlang, Es weiß nicht, was es trägt; [Am Haupte]5 ganz Von Himmelsglanz Einen Lilienkranz. Mit Staunen [schauen]6 all' die Leut' Dies Kränzlein licht im Haar, Das Mägdlein aber wallt nicht weit, Tritt vor den Hochaltar: "Zur Nonne weiht Mich arme Maid! Stirb, Lieb' und Freud'!" À Augsbourg il y a une grande maison Près de la vieille cathédrale. [Par un petit matin clair]1 en sort Une jeune fille très pieuse ; Un chant retentit, La chère silhouette Se rend à la cathédrale. Là, devant la sainte image de Marie Elle s'agenouille et prie. Le ciel a empli son cœur Et tout plaisir terrestre s'en est enfui : « Ô vierge pure ! Permets-moi juste D'être à toi seule ! » Peu après le son assourdi des cloches Réveille l'orante. La jeune fille avance dans la nef ; Elle ne sait ce qu'elle porte ; Sur sa tête Nimbée de l'éclat du ciel, C'est une couronne de lis. Tous les gens regardent avec étonnement La lumière de cette couronne dans ses cheveux, Mais la jeune fille ne va pas loin, Elle se place devant le grand autel : « Consacrez-moi nonne, Moi pauvre fille ! Mourez, amour et joie ! » Dieu, fais que cette jeune fille Porte paisiblement sa couronne, Elle est la préférée de mon cœur Et le restera jusqu'au jour du jugement dernier. Elle ne le sait pas, Mon cœur se brise Mourez, amour et lumière.

Wohlauf! noch getrunken den funkelnden Wein! Ade nun, ihr Lieben! geschieden muß sein. Ade nun, ihr Berge, du väterlich' Haus! Es treibt in die Ferne mich mächtig hinaus. Die Sonne, sie bleibet am Himmel nicht stehn, Es treibt sie, durch Länder und Meere zu gehn. Die Woge nicht haftet am einsamen Strand, Die Stürme, sie brausen mit Macht durch das Land. Mit eilenden Wolken der Vogel dort zieht Und singt in der Ferne ein heimatlich' Lied, So treibt es den Burschen durch Wälder und Feld, Zu gleichen der Mutter, der wandernden Welt. Da grüßen ihn Vögel bekannt überm Meer, Sie flogen von Fluren der Heimat hierher; Da duften die Blumen vertraulich um ihn, Sie trieben vom Lande die Lüfte dahin. Allons ! Buvons encore du vin pétillant ! Adieu maintenant, vous que j'aime ! Il faut se séparer. Adieu maintenant, vous montagnes, toi, maison paternelle ! Une force me pousse à partir au loin. Le soleil ne reste pas planté au ciel, Il est poussé à aller à travers pays et mers. La vague ne reste pas fixée à la plage solitaire, Les tempêtes grondent avec force sur les terres. L'oiseau s'en va avec les nuages pressés Et chante au loin la chanson de son pays, L'homme est ainsi poussé par forêts et champs Tout comme l'est sa mère, la nature vagabonde. Ici au-dessus de la mer, les oiseaux le reconnaissent et le saluent, Ils ont volé jusqu'ici depuis les champs de leur pays, Là, autour de lui les fleurs embaument familièrement, Les vents les ont poussées ici depuis leur pays. Les oiseaux connaissent sa maison paternelle, Il a planté [un jour]1 des fleurs pour un bouquet d'amour, Et Amour qui le suit le tient par la main : Ainsi son pays deviendra le pays le plus lointain.

Was ich erschau' in deinem Grund Ist nicht Gewöhnlichen zu nennen. Doch wird mir klar zu dieser Stund', Wie nichts den Freund vom Freund kann trennen. Auf diesen Glauben, Glas so hold! Trink' ich dich aus mit hohem Mute. Klar spiegelt sich der Sterne Gold, Pokal, in deinem teuren Blute! Still geht der Mond das Tal entlang, Ernst tönt die mitternächt'ge Stunde. Leer steht das Glas! Aujourd'hui tu fus rempli pour moi Avec l'or clair comme la lune d'une vigne d'Allemagne ! Dans tes reflets profonds et sacrés Je plonge mon regard dans un pieux frisson. Ce que j'ai vu dans ton fond Ne peut être décrit aux gens ordinaires. Pourtant à cette heure il m'est clairement apparu Que rien ne peut séparer un ami de son ami. Sur cette croyance, verre si aimable, Je te vide avec grand courage ! L'or clair des étoiles se reflète, Coupe, dans ton sang précieux ! La lune passe en silence le long de la vallée L'heure de minuit sonne avec gravité. Le verre est vide ! La note sacrée Résonne dans le fond de cristal.
