Wir müssen, Geliebteste, leise
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Danish (Dansk)
Wir müssen, Geliebteste, leise
Hinschreiten, ich und du.
Es schläft eine Sangesweise
In Waldes nächtlicher Ruh.
Verstummt sind Winde und Wellen
Und aller Singvögelein Mund,
Schweigend rinnen die Quellen
Blank über moosigen Grund.
Des Mondlichts stiller Reigen
Durchspielt das Buchengeheg,
Es schlummert in süssem Schweigen
Ein silberner Streif am Weg.
Die Wolken selber droben
Schweben auf Flügeln breit
Und schaun von Glanz umwoben
In die Waldeseinsamkeit.
Wie Wind' und Wellen leise
Hinschreiten wir, ich und du.
Es schläft eine Sangesweise
In Waldes nächtlicher Ruh.

We must, my most beloved, walk
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
We must, my most beloved, walk
Quietly hither, I and you.
A melody of song is sleeping
In the nocturnal peace of the forest.
The winds and the waves have fallen mute
And all the beaks of the songbirds,
Silently the water-springs flow
Shiningly over the mossy hollow.
The quiet roundelay of moonlight
Plays through the beechwood close,
In sweet silence there slumbers
A silver bar of light along the path.
The clouds themselves above
Are floating on broad pinions
And, woven about with radiance,
They gaze into the forest solitude.
Like the winds and waves, quietly
We must walk hither, I and you.
A melody of song is sleeping
In the nocturnal peace of the forest.
