Vine, estimat maig, i fes reverdir els arbres i que, prop del rierol, floreixin per a mi les petites violetes! M’agradaria tant poder tornar a veure una violeta, ai, estimat maig, que bé poder tornar a passejar! Certament, els dies d’hivern també donen moltes satisfaccions; es pot caminar per la neu i practicar molts jocs al vespre, fer castells de cartes, jugar a la gallina cega i a la penyora; també es poden fer passeigs amb trineu per els bonics camps a l’aire lliure. Però quan canten els ocellets i nosaltres, alegres i lleugers, saltem damunt la verda gespa, això és una altra cosa! Ara el meu cavallet de fusta s’ha de quedar en un racó, car a fora no s’hi pot anar, el jardí és ple de fang. El que més greu em sap, però, és la pena de la Lottchen; la pobre noia espera amb frisança el temps de la florida; debades li porto jocs per passar el temps, ella seu a la seva cadireta com la gallina damunt l’ou. Ai, si almenys a fora fes més bonança i el paisatge fos més verd! Vine, estimat maig, nosaltres els infants t’ho preguem de tot cor! Oh, vine i porta’ns sobretot moltes violetes i també molts rossinyols i jolius cucuts!
