Non, je ne l'aimais pas ; mais de bonheur émue,
Ma sœur, je me sentais rougir en l‘écoutant ;
Je fuyais son regard, je tremblais à sa vue :
        Il m'aimait tant !

Je me parais pour lui, car je savais lui plaire ;
Pour lui, j'ai mis ces fleurs et ce voile flottant ;
Je ne parlais qu'à lui, je craignais sa colère :
        Il m'aimait tant !

Mais un soir il me dit : « Dans la sombre vallée
» Viendrez-vous avec moi? " Je le promis... pourtant,
En vain il m‘attendit ; je n’y suis pas allée...
        Il m'aimait tant !

Alors il a quitté ma joyeuse demeure.
Malheureux! il a dû me maudire en partant ;
Je ne le verrai plus ! je suis triste, je pleure :
        Il m'aimait tant !
