O Täler weit, O Höhen, o schöner grüner Wald, du meiner Lust und Wehen andächt'ger Aufenthalt! Da draussen, stets betrogen, [saust]1 die geschäft'ge Welt; schlag' noch einmal die Bogen um mich, du grünes Zelt! Wenn es beginnt zu tagen, Die Erde dampft und blinkt, Die Vögel lustig schlagen, Daß dir dein Herz erklingt: Da mag vergehn, verwehen Das trübe Erdenleid, Da sollst du auferstehen In junger Herrlichkeit! Im Walde steht geschrieben ein stilles ernstes Wort vom rechten Tun und Lieben, und was des Menschen Hort. Ich habe treu gelesen die Worte, schlicht und wahr, und durch mein ganzes Wesen ward's unaussprechlich klar. Bald werd' ich dich verlassen, fremd in die Fremde geh'n, auf buntbewegten Gassen des lebens Schauspiel seh'n. Und mitten in dem Leben wird deines Ernst's Gewalt mich Einsamen erheben, so wird mein Herz nicht alt.

Ô larges vallées, Ô sommets, Ô belle et verte forêt, Toi ma joie et mon tourment, Lieu de recueillement ! En dehors d'ici, toujours berné, Le monde agité se presse ; Tends encore une fois tes arches Autour de moi, toi verte tente ! Lorsque le jour se lève La terre fume et scintille, Les oiseaux chantent gaiement, Si cela retentit dans ton cœur : Alors peuvent disparaître, se dissiper Les sombres chagrins terrestres, Et tu ressusciteras Dans une jeune splendeur ! Dans la forêt, est écrit Le mot silencieux et grave De l'acte et de l'amour sincères Ce qui est le trésor de l'humanité. J'ai lu fidèlement, Ces mots humbles et vrais, Et de par tout mon être, Ils étaient indiciblement clairs.
