Dans un sommeil que charmait ton image
Je rêvais le bonheur, ardent mirage,
Tes yeux étaient plus doux, ta voix pure et sonore,
Tu rayonnais comme un ciel éclairé par l'aurore;

Tu m'appelais et je quittais la terre
Pour m'enfuir avec toi vers la lumière,
Les cieux pour nous entr'ouvraient leurs nues,
Splendeurs inconnues, lueurs divines entrevues,

Hélas! Hélas! triste réveil des songes
Je t'appelle, ô nuit, rends moi tes mensonges,
Reviens, reviens radieuse,
Reviens ô nuit mystérieuse!

Out of a dream
Language: English  after the French (Français)
Into my slumber charmed with your image
Joyous dream, soaring heart, into a glorious mirage
More tender were your eyes, your voice was pure --
Radiant you shone like Aurora in heaven.

You called my name, and I rose up flying
With you to the sky -- together floating into the light.
Heaven its clouded curtain for us unfolded,
Revealing splendors unknown - and welcoming glow divine.

Alas, alas, now to waken in sorrow and alone
I call on Night : return your illusions and lies --
Return, return, illusion !
Return, O, wond'rous, wond'rous night -- mysterious dream !
