Einen weißen Fleck des hellen Mondes
Auf dem Rücken seines schwarzen Rockes,
So spaziert Pierrot im lauen Abend,
Aufzusuchen Glück und Abenteuer.
 
Plötzlich - stört ihn was an seinem Anzug,
Er beschaut sich rings und findet richtig -
Einen weißen Fleck des hellen Mondes
Auf dem Rücken seines schwarzen Rockes.
 
Warte! denkt er: das ist so ein Gipsfleck!
Wischt und wischt, doch - bringt ihn nicht herunter!
Und so geht er, giftgeschwollen, weiter,
Reibt und reibt bis an den frühen Morgen --
Einen weißen Fleck des hellen Mondes.

sul dorso del suo nero mantello,
passeggia Pierrot nella tiepida sera,
in cerca di felicità e di avventure.

Ed ecco che qualcosa del suo abito lo disturba
si guarda intorno e trova, appunto,
una macchia bianca della luna lucente
sul dorso del suo nero mantello.

Aspetta! Pensa: è una macchia di gesso!
Pulisce, e pulisce ma - non va proprio via!
E va avanti così, sempre più inviperito,
strofina e strofina fino al mattino -
una macchia bianca della luna lucente.
