Großvater und Großmutter,
Die saßen im Gartenhag,
Es lächelte still ihr Antlitz,

Die Arme verschlungen, ruhten

Wie Blumenhaine im Mai.

Ein Bächlein rauschte vorüber
Mit plätscherndem Wanderlied;
Stumm zog das Gewölk am Himmel,
Bis unseren Blicken es schied.

Das Laub, verwelkt und zerstreut,
Und schweigend an uns vorüber
Zog leisen Schrittes die Zeit.

Stumm blickte auf's junge Pärchen
Das alte stille Paar;
Des Lebens Doppelspiegel

Sie sahn uns an und dachten
Der schönen Vergangenheit;

Portrait de famille

Grand-père et grand-mère,
Ils étaient assis dans le bosquet du jardin ;
Il y avait un sourire silencieux sur leurs visages,
Comme un jour d'hiver ensoleillé.

Les bras enlacés,
Moi et ma bien-aimée, nous nous reposions là,
Nos cœurs fleurissaient et résonnaient
Comme un massif de fleurs en mai.

Un petit ruisseau murmurait tout près,
Avec un gargouillis de chant de marche ;
Silencieusement les nuages s'étiraient dans le ciel,
Jusqu'à ce qu'ils disparaissent de notre vue.

Bruyamment depuis les arbres
Le feuillage se fanait et se dispersait,
Et en silence au-dessus de nous
Le temps passait à pas feutrés.

Sans rien dire, sur le jeune couple se tournait le regard
Du vieux couple silencieux.
Un double miroir de la vie
Se tenait devant nous lumineux et authentique.

Ils nous regardaient et pensaient
Au passé heureux.
Nous les regardions et pensions
Aux jours lointains à venir.
