Ich bin wie eine Fahne von Fernen umgeben. Ich ahne die Winde, die kommen, und muß sie leben, während die Dinge unten sich noch nicht rühren: die Türen schließen noch sanft, und in den Kaminen ist Stille; die Fenster zittern noch nicht, und der Staub ist noch schwer. Da weiß ich die Stürme schon und bin erregt wie das Meer. Und breite mich aus und falle in mich hinein und werfe mich ab und bin ganz allein in dem großen Sturm.

Je suis comme un drapeau entouré de lointains. Je pressens les vents qui arrivent et je dois les vivre, tandis que les choses en bas ne bougent encore pas ; les portes se ferment encore doucement et l'âtre est encore silence ; les fenêtres ne tremblent toujours pas et la poussière est encore lourde. Puis je reconnais déjà la tempête et suis excité comme la mer. Et je me déploie et je retombe en moi et je m'affale et suis seul dans la grande tempête.
