She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that's best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes: Thus mellow'd to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impair'd the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o'er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express How pure, how dear their dwelling-place. And on that cheek, and o'er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent.

Ella incede in bellezza, come la notte Di climi senza nubi e di cieli stellati; e quanto c'è di meglio dell'ombra e della luce si incontra nel suo viso e nei suoi occhi: resi più dolci in quella luce tenera che il cielo nega alla pienezza del giorno. Un'ombra un po' più intensa, un più delicato raggio, avrebbero quasi turbato la grazia indefinibile che si muove ondeggiando dalla sua chioma corvina o che dolcemente riluce nel suo viso; dove pensieri soavi serenamente mostrano in quale luogo puro e caro hanno dimora. Su quella guancia e sopra quella fronte, così dolce e calma eppure così eloquente, un sorriso che incanta, un colore che splende, raccontano soltanto di giorni dedicati al bene, di una mente in pace con ogni cosa terrena, di un cuore colmo di amore innocente!
