Sieben Nacht- und Todeslieder für mittlere Singstimme und Klavier nach Gedichten von Hermann Hesse

Song Cycle by Christian Immo Schneider (b. 1935)

1. Böse Zeit
 (Sung text)

Text Authorship:

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Böse Zeit", written c1909

2. Nacht
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
Ich habe meine Kerze ausgelöscht;
Zum offenen Fenster strömt die Nacht herein,
Umarmt mich sanft und läßt mich ihren Freund
Und ihren Bruder sein.

Wir beide sind am selben Heimweh krank;
Wir senden ahnungsvolle Träume aus
Und reden flüsternd von der alten Zeit
In unsres Vaters Haus.

Text Authorship:

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Die Nacht", subtitle: "(1907)", written 1907, appears in Unterwegs, first published 1911

3. Einsame Nacht
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
Die ihr meine Brüder seid,
Arme Menschen nah und ferne,
Die ihr im Bezirk der Sterne
Tröstung träumet eurem Leid,
Die ihr wortelos gefaltet
In die blaß gestirnte Nacht
Schmale Dulderhände haltet,
Die ihr leidet, die ihr wacht,
Arme, irrende Gemeinde,
Schiffer ohne Stern und Glück --
Fremde, dennoch mir Vereinte,
Gebt mir meinen Gruß zurück.

4. Regennacht
 (Sung text)

In diesem stetig leisen Lied,
So wie ein tiefer Geigenklang
Geheimer Sehnsucht dunklen Drang
In Töne hüllt und weiterträgt
Und da und dort ein Herz bewegt,
Das nach demselben Heimwehland
Sich sehnend, keine Worte fand.
Und was nicht Wort, nicht Geige sagt,
Wird Ton und schwillt zu stiller Macht
Im stetig leisen Wiegetakt
Der windbewegten Regennacht;
Die nimmt, was klaglos rang und litt,
In ihre dunklen Lieder mit.

5. Irgendwo
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
Durch des Lebens Wüste irr ich glühend
Und erstöhne unter meiner Last,
Aber irgendwo, vergessen fast,
Weiß ich schattige Gärten kühl und blühend.

Aber irgendwo in Traumesferne
Weiß ich warten eine Ruhestatt,
Wo die Seele wieder Heimat hat,
Weiß ich Schlummer warten, Nacht und Sterne.

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Irgendwo", written 1925

6. Bruder Tod
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
Auch zu mir kommst du einmal,
Du vergißt mich nicht,
Und zu Ende ist die Qual
Und die Kette bricht.

Noch erscheinst du fremd und fern,
Lieber Bruder Tod.
Stehest als ein kühler Stern
Über meiner Not.

Aber einmal wirst du nah
Und voll Flammen sein --
Komm, Geliebter, ich bin da,
Nimm mich, ich bin dein.

7. Dorfkirchhof
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
So nahe lieget ihr beisammen
In eurem Garten, stille Schar.
Von eures Lebens grellen Flammen
Loht keine mehr. Das Glockenläuten
Will euch nicht Leid noch Lust bedeuten,
Noch Anklang dessen, was einst war.

Euch ist genug, dass in den Lüften
Hoch über euch der Flieder blüht
Und Sommernachts mit warmen Düften
Ob eurer Stätte festlich glüht.
Was noch in euch als Kraft, Begierde
Und unerlöster Drang gelebt,
Ist nun erlöst und frei und schwebt
Im Duft dahin als Spiel und Zierde.

Text Authorship:

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Dorfkirchhof", written 1908
