Kein Stimmlein noch schallt von allen
In [frühester]¹ Morgenstund,
Wie still ist's noch in den Hallen
[Durch den]² weiten Waldesgrund.
 
Ich stehe hoch überm Tale
Stille vor großer Lust,
Und schau nach dem ersten Strahle,
Kühl [schauernd]³ in tiefster Brust.
 
Wie sieht da zu dieser Stunde
So anders das Land herauf,
Nichts hör ich da in der Runde
Als von fern der Ströme Lauf.
 
Und [ehe]⁴ sich alle erhoben
Des Tages Freuden und Weh,
Will ich, Herr Gott, dich loben
Hier einsam in stiller Höh. -
 
Nun rauschen schon stärker die Wälder,
Morgenlicht funkelt herauf,
Die Lerche singt über den Feldern,
Schöne Erde, nun wache auf!

Es war, als [hätt']¹ der Himmel,
Die Erde still geküßt,
Daß sie im Blütenschimmer
Von ihm [nun]² träumen müßt.

Die Luft ging durch die Felder,
Die Ähren wogten sacht,
Es rauschten leis die Wälder,
So sternklar war die Nacht.

Und meine Seele spannte
Weit ihre Flügel aus,
Flog [durch]³ die stillen [Lande]⁴,
Als flöge sie nach Haus.

Es zog eine Hochzeit den Berg entlang,
Ich hörte die Vögel schlagen,
Da blitzten viel Reiter, das Waldhorn klang,
Das war ein lustiges Jagen!¹

Und eh' ich's gedacht, war alles verhallt,
Die Nacht bedecket die Runde,
Nur von den Bergen [rauschet]² der Wald
Und mich [schauert]³ im Herzensgrunde.

So reist die Zeit die ganze Nacht,
Nimmt manchen mit, der's nicht gedacht.

Wo ist nun hin die bunte Lust,
Des Freundes Trost und treue Brust,
[Des Weibes]¹ süßer Augenschein?
Will keiner mit mir munter sein?

Da's nun so stille auf der Welt,
Ziehn Wolken einsam übers Feld,
Und Feld und Baum besprechen sich, --
O Menschenkind, was schauert dich?

Wie weit die falsche Welt auch sei,
Bleibt mir doch Einer nur getreu,
Der mit mir weint, der mit mir wacht,
Wenn ich nur recht an ihn gedacht.

Frisch auf denn, liebe Nachtigall,
Du Wasserfall mit hellem Schall!
Gott loben wollen wir vereint,
Bis daß der lichte Morgen scheint!
