1. Gute Nacht [sung text checked 1 time]
Fremd bin ich eingezogen,
Fremd zieh' ich wieder aus.
Der Mai war mir gewogen
Mit manchem Blumenstrauß.
Das Mädchen sprach von Liebe,
Die Mutter gar von Eh' -
Nun ist die Welt so trübe,
Der Weg gehüllt in Schnee.

Ich kann zu meiner Reisen
Nicht wählen mit der Zeit:
Muß selbst den Weg mir weisen
In dieser Dunkelheit.
Es zieht ein Mondenschatten
Als mein Gefährte mit,
Und auf den weißen Matten
Such' ich des Wildes Tritt.

Was soll ich länger weilen,
[Bis]1 man mich trieb' hinaus?
Laß irre Hunde heulen
Vor ihres Herren Haus!
Die Liebe liebt das Wandern, -
Gott hat sie so gemacht -
Von Einem zu dem Andern -
Fein Liebchen, gute Nacht!

Will dich im Traum nicht stören,
Wär' Schad' um deine Ruh',
Sollst meinen Tritt nicht hören -
Sacht, sacht die Thüre zu!
[Ich schreibe nur im Gehen]2
An's Thor [noch]3 gute Nacht,
Damit du mögest sehen,
[Ich hab' an dich]4 gedacht.

1. Goeie nag
Vreemd was ek met my aankoms,
vreemd moet ek weer vertrek.
Die lente het my tafel
met ruikers ryk gedek:
Die nooi praat toe van liefde,
haar moeder selfs van trou, –
nou is die pad in sneeu gehul,
die wêreld vaal en grou.

Ek kon die tyd nie kies nie
vir hierdie bitter reis;
ek moet, deur nag en donker,
vir my die pad self wys.
Dwarsoor die gryswit vlakte
soek ek die wild se tree,
met langs my, as my makker,
die maan se skaduwee.

Ag, waarvoor langer aanbly –
dat hulle my verdryf?
Laat maar hul brandsiek honde
voor hulle huise kyf!
Die liefde hou van swerwe
– God het dit so gemaak –
oor velerlei mooi erwe –
my liefste, lekker slaap!

Ek hoop jy word nie wakker,
ek wil jou droom nie steur,
moenie my treë hoor nie –
ek sluit, sag-sag, die deur!
Ek skryf net in die weggaan
my groet nog op die hek;
dan weet jy, ek het aan jou
gedink toe ek vertrek.

2. Die Wetterfahne [sung text checked 1 time]

2. Die weerhaan
Daar, op my nooientjie se huis
speel warrelwinde met die haan.
“Dit skel die arme vlugteling uit!“ –
verbeel ek my al in my waan.

Hy moes dit vroeër opgelet het,
dié windlawaai op die gebou,
dan sou hy nooit in hierdie huis nie
gesoek het na ’n goeie vrou.

En binne speel die wind met harte,
nes op die dak, net minder luid.
Wat moet hul omgee vir my smarte?
Hul kind is mos ’n welaf bruid.

3. Gefrorne Tränen [sung text checked 1 time]
Gefrorne Tropfen fallen
Von meinen Wangen ab:
[Und ist's]1 mir denn entgangen,
Daß ich geweinet hab'?

Ei Thränen, meine Thränen,
Und seid ihr gar so lau,
Daß ihr erstarrt zu Eise,
Wie kühler Morgenthau?

[Und]2 dringt doch aus der Quelle
Der Brust so glühend heiß,
Als wolltet ihr zerschmelzen
Des ganzen Winters Eis.

3. Bevrore trane
Bevrore druppels kantel
van my gesig se wang:
Hoe kom ek dit nie agter,
huil ek alreeds so lang?

Ag trane, ag my trane,
is julle dan so lou
dat julle moet verhard
tot ys soos oggenddou?

En tog vloei julle skroeiend,
asof jul doelwit is
om hierdie hele winter
se yslaag te ontvries!

4. Erstarrung [sung text checked 1 time]
Ich such' im Schnee vergebens
Nach ihrer Tritte Spur,
[Hier, wo wir oft gewandelt
Selbander durch die]1 Flur.

Ich will den Boden küssen,
Durchdringen Eis und Schnee
Mit meinen heißen Thränen,
Bis ich die Erde seh'.

Wo find' ich eine Blüthe,
Wo find' ich grünes Gras?
Die Blumen sind erstorben,
Der Rasen sieht so blaß.

Soll denn kein Angedenken
Ich nehmen mit von hier?
Wenn meine Schmerzen schweigen,
Wer sagt mir dann von ihr?

Mein Herz ist wie [erfroren]2,
Kalt starrt ihr Bild darin:
Schmilzt je das Herz mir wieder,
Fließt auch [das]3 Bild dahin.

4. Verstarring
Vergeefs soek ek haar treë
daar op die sneeu se vlak,
waar, aan my arm, sy vroeër
deur liggroen gras sou stap.

Daarom wil ek hier neerkniel,
en al die sneeu en ys
ontdooi met snikheet trane,
totdat die aarde wys.

Waar vind ek nou ’n bloeisel,
waar nou ’n lentetuin?
Hier is net dooie blomme,
hul blare lankal bruin.

Wat mag ek van haar saamvat,
net my herinnering?
As al my smarte stilbly,
wie sal van haar dan sing?

Hier, in my hart se koue,
staar koud haar beeld en stom:
Sou ooit my hart weer smelt, dan
smelt ook haar beeld met hom.

5. Der Lindenbaum [sung text checked 1 time]
Am Brunnen vor dem Thore
Da steht ein Lindenbaum:
Ich träumt' in seinem Schatten
So manchen süßen Traum.

Ich schnitt in seine Rinde
So manches liebe Wort;
Es zog in Freud' und Leide
Zu ihm mich immer fort.

Ich mußt' auch heute wandern
Vorbei in tiefer Nacht,
Da hab' ich noch im [Dunkel]1
Die Augen zugemacht.

Und seine Zweige rauschten,
Als riefen sie mir zu:
Komm her zu mir, Geselle,
Hier findst du deine Ruh'!

Die kalten Winde bliesen
Mir grad' in's Angesicht,
Der Hut flog mir vom Kopfe,
Ich wendete mich nicht.

Nun bin ich manche Stunde
Entfernt von jenem Ort,
Und immer hör' ich's rauschen:
Du fändest Ruhe dort!

5. Die lindeboom
By waters voor die stadspoort
daar staan ’n lindeboom,
en telkens het sy skadu
soet drome my laat droom.

En in die boomstam kerf ek
dan graag ’n liewe woord;
altyd, in leed en vreugde,
verlang ek na dié oord.

Ek het ook op my uittog
vannag verbygestryk,
maar het, al was dit donker,
van hom net weggekyk.

Toe ruis die boom se takke
asof hul my wil sus:
“Kom nader, beste makker,
hier vind jy ware rus!“

Net toe het koue winde
teen my gesig gewaai;
die hoed vlieg van my kop af,
– ek het nie omgedraai.

Nou is ek hoeveel ure
al by die boom verby,
maar steeds hoor ek die ruising:
“Hier sou jy rus kon kry!“

6. Wasserflut [sung text checked 1 time]
Manche Thrän' aus meinen Augen
Ist gefallen in den Schnee;
Seine kalten Flocken saugen
Durstig ein das heiße Weh.

[Wann]1 die Gräser sprossen wollen,
Weht daher ein lauer Wind,
Und das Eis zerspringt in Schollen,
Und der weiche Schnee zerrinnt.

Schnee, du weißt von meinem Sehnen:
[Sag mir, wohin]2 geht dein Lauf?
Folge nach nur meinen Thränen,
Nimmt dich bald das Bächlein auf.

Wirst mit ihm die Stadt durchziehen,
Muntre Straßen ein und aus:
Fühlst du meine Thränen glühen,
Da ist meiner Liebsten Haus.

6. Watervloed
Vele trane uit my oë
het hier in die sneeu geval;
en die warm verdriet word gretig
ingedrink deur sy kristal.

Waar die grasse weer wil opskiet
waai ’n milde lentebries,
en die sagte sneeu sal wegsmelt,
en die winter-ys ontvries.

Sneeu, jy weet van my verlange:
Sê, waarheen wil jy dan gaan?
Volg maar net die vloei van trane,
en die stroompie vat jou saam.

Met hom sal jy deur die stad loop:
Strate, mense, en gedruis;
waar my trane weer eens warm word
daar vind jy my nooi se huis.

7. Auf dem Flusse [sung text checked 1 time]
Der du so lustig rauschtest,
Du heller, wilder Fluß,
Wie still bist du geworden,
Giebst keinen Scheidegruß.

Mit harter, starrer Rinde
Hast du dich überdeckt,
Liegst kalt und unbeweglich
Im Sande [hingestreckt]1.

In deine Decke grab' ich
Mit einem spitzen Stein
Den Namen meiner Liebsten
Und Stund' und Tag hinein:

Den Tag des ersten Grußes,
Den Tag, an dem ich ging,
Um Nam' und Zahlen windet
Sich ein zerbrochner Ring.

Mein Herz, in diesem Bache
Erkennst du nun dein Bild?
Ob's unter seiner Rinde
Wohl auch so reißend schwillt?

7. Op die rivier
Rivier, jy het so vrolik
gerammel en gewoed;
nou loop jy stil, geruisloos,
en sonder afskeidsgroet.

Jy het ’n harde korslaag
oor jou nat lyf getrek,
en jy lê koud en kalm
oor sand en gruis gestrek.

En in jou ysdop sny ek
met stukkies vlymskerp klip
die naam van my geliefde,
die dag, die uur, heel stip:

Die dag van eerste blikke,
die dag, toe ek moes loop;
om naam en om getalle
draai ’n ontwarde knoop.

Sien jy jou eie beeld nou,
my hart, in die rivier?
Sou in sy dop die hart
ook swel met dié se gier?

8. Rückblick [sung text checked 1 time]

Hab' mich an [jedem]1 Stein gestoßen,
So eilt' ich zu der Stadt hinaus;
Die Krähen warfen Bäll' und Schloßen
Auf meinen Hut von jedem Haus.

Wie anders hast du mich empfangen,
Du Stadt der Unbeständigkeit!
An deinen blanken Fenstern sangen
Die Lerch' und Nachtigall im Streit.

Die runden Lindenbäume blühten,
Die klaren Rinnen rauschten hell,
Und ach, zwei Mädchenaugen glühten! -
Da war's geschehn um dich, Gesell!

Kömmt mir der Tag in die Gedanken,
Möcht' ich noch einmal rückwärts sehn,
Möcht' ich zurücke wieder wanken,
Vor ihrem Hause stille stehn.

8. Terugblik
Hoe brand dit onder my twee sole,
daar agter my nie meer verrys.

My voet gestamp teen elke kei –
so het ek uit die stad genael;
van elke straatboom het ’n kraai
ysklonte op my kop laat hael.

O stad van wisselvalligheid,
hoe anders het jy my ontvang,
toe vink met nagtegaal wou stry
wie sing vir my die mooiste sang:

Die lindebome het gebloei,
die hele mensdom het rinkink,
twee meisieoë het gegloei,
– my maat, jou doppie was geklink!

Roep ek dié dag my in gedagte

Unsre Freuden, unsre [Wehen]1,
Alles eines Irrlichts Spiel!

Durch des Bergstroms trockne Rinnen
Wind' ich ruhig mich hinab -
Jeder Strom wird's Meer gewinnen,
Jedes Leiden auch [ein]2 Grab.

9. Dwaallig
In ’n diep en skurwe kloof
laat ’n dwaallig my verdwaal:
Nogtans klim ek rustig verder,
ek sal wel ’n doelwit haal.

Om te dwaal is my ou nering,
elke pad het mos sy doel –
blydskap, hartseer, vreugde, smarte:
Dwaling dobbel, óns moet voel.

Deur ’n stroom se droë lope
daal ek rustig, rustig af –
elke stroom sal wel sy see haal,

Da ich zur Ruh' mich lege;
Das Wandern hielt mich munter hin
Auf unwirthbarem Wege.

Die Füße frugen nicht nach Rast,
Es war zu kalt zum Stehen,
Der Rücken fühlte keine Last,
Der Sturm half fort mich wehen.

In eines Köhlers engem Haus
Hab' Obdach ich gefunden;

Fühlst in der Still' erst deinen Wurm
Mit heißem Stich sich regen!

10. Rus
Nou voel ek eers, waar ek hier lê,
ek is heel afgemat;
die voetslaan het my flink gehou
op dié klipharde pad.

My voete het nie rus gevra nie,
dit was te koud vir staan;
my rug het geen gewig gevoel nie,
en stormwind dryf my aan.

’n Kaal skerm in die bos bied my
nou skuiling teen die weer;
my lyf kan egter kwalik rus,
my wonde is te seer.

Ook jy, my hart, sterk in die storm,
stoutmoedig in die stryd,
voel nou eers in die stilte hoe
jou adder seer kan byt.

11. Frühlingstraum [sung text checked 1 time]
Ich träumte von bunten Blumen,
So wie sie wohl blühen im Mai,
Ich träumte von grünen Wiesen,
Von lustigem Vogelgeschrei.

Und als die Hähne krähten,
Da ward mein Auge wach;
Da war es kalt und finster,
Es schrieen die Raben vom Dach.

Doch an den Fensterscheiben,
Wer mahlte die Blätter da?
Ihr lacht wohl über den Träumer,
Der Blumen im Winter sah?

Ich träumte von Lieb' um Liebe,
Von einer schönen Maid,
Von Herzen und von Küssen,
Von [Wonn']1 und Seligkeit.

Und als die Hähne krähten,
Da ward mein Herze wach;
Nun sitz' ich hier alleine
Und denke dem Traume nach.

Die Augen schließ' ich wieder,
Noch schlägt das Herz so warm.
Wann grünt ihr Blätter am Fenster?
Wann halt' ich [dich, Liebchen,]2 im Arm?

11. Lentedroom
Ek droom van kleurvolle blomme,
soos ’n blom in die lente moet bloei,
ek droom van welige grasse,
groen en vars, soos grasse moet groei.

En toe die hane gekraai het,
word ek wakker en sien die sneeu;
toe was dit koud en duister,
en eintlik het kraaie geskreeu.

Maar kyk: Die vensters se ruite –
wie skilder die blare daarop?
Seker lag julle oor die dromer
wat hom deur ’n ysblom laat fop.

Ek droom van liefde om liefde,
van ’n meisie mooi en verruk,
van soene en van liefkosings,
van saligheid en van geluk.

En toe die hane gekraai het,
toe ruk my hart tot sy boom;
nou sit ek hier op my eie
en onthou met verlange my droom.

Nou sluit ek weer my oë,
Lê my liefste ooit weer in my arm?

12. Einsamkeit [sung text checked 1 time]
Wie eine trübe Wolke
Durch heitre Lüfte geht,
[Wann]1 in der [Tanne]2 Wipfel
Ein mattes Lüftchen weht:

So zieh' ich meine Straße
Dahin mit trägem Fuß,
Durch helles, frohes Leben,
Einsam und ohne Gruß.

Ach, daß die Luft so ruhig!
Ach, daß die Welt so licht!
Als noch die Stürme tobten,
War ich so elend nicht.

12. Eensaamheid
Nes grys en somber wolke
oor helder lug kan saai
as oor die hoë rante
’n sagte briesie waai ...

... so trek ek op my reisweg
op trae voete heen,
deur vreugdevolle lewe:
Misken, verwerp, alleen.

Ag, dat die wind so stil is,
die wêreld lig en bly!
Toe nog die storm gewoed het,
was ek van sorge vry.

13. Die Post [sung text checked 1 time]
Mein Herz?

Die Post bringt keinen Brief für dich:
Was drängst du denn so wunderlich,
Mein Herz?

my hart?

Hoe beur jy dan so sonderling,
my hart?

waar ek eens ’n geliefde had,
my hart!

Wil jy graag oorstap en gaan vra,
hoe gaan dit met jou liefste daar,
my hart?

14. Der greise Kopf [sung text checked 1 time]

Hab' wieder schwarze Haare,
Daß mir's vor meiner Jugend graut -
Wie weit noch bis zur Bahre!

Vom Abendroth zum Morgenlicht
Ward mancher Kopf zum Greise.
Wer glaubt's? Und meiner ward es nicht
Auf dieser ganzen Reise!

14. Die grys kop
Die ryp het oor my kop oornag
’n skyn van wit gesprei;
toe glo ek al ek is nou oud
en was uitbundig bly.

Maar gou het dit weer weggedou
en swart is weer my hare,
ek het ’n afsku van my jeug –
my uitvaart neem nog jare!

Van skemeraand tot skemerdag
word menigeen al grys.
Helaas, my kop misluk daarmee
dwarsdeur die hele reis!

15. Die Krähe [sung text checked 1 time]
Eine Krähe [war]1 mit mir
Aus der Stadt gezogen,
Ist bis heute für und für
Um mein Haupt geflogen.

Krähe, wunderliches Thier,
Willst mich nicht verlassen?
Meinst wohl bald als Beute hier
Meinen Leib zu fassen?

Nun, es wird nicht weit mehr gehn
An dem Wanderstabe.
Krähe, laß mich endlich sehn
Treue bis zum Grabe!

15. Die kraai
Met my uittog uit die stad
was by my ’n kraai;
en tot nou toe het dit stadig
om my kop gedraai.

Kraai, jou wonderlike ding,
wil jy by my bly?
Jy dink seker, jy sal gou
my as kos kan kry?

Wel, my reis gaan nie meer ver nie
met my wandelstaf.
Kraai, wys jý vir my wat trou is,
trou tot in die graf!

16. Letzte Hoffnung [sung text checked 1 time]
[Hier]1 und da ist an den Bäumen
[Noch ein buntes]2 Blatt zu sehn,
Und ich bleibe vor den Bäumen
Oftmals in Gedanken stehn.

Schaue nach dem einen Blatte,
Hänge meine Hoffnung dran;
Spielt der Wind mit meinem Blatte,
Zittr' ich, was ich zittern kann.

Ach, und fällt das Blatt zu Boden,
[Fällt mit ihm die Hoffnung ab]3,
[Fall']4 ich selber mit zu Boden,
Wein' auf meiner Hoffnung [Grab]5.

16. Laaste hoop
Hier en daar sien ek bont blare
aan die bome van ’n laan,
en ek bly voor hierdie bome
kort-kort in gedagte staan.

Ek bekyk een van die blare,
en ek hang my hoop daaraan;
as die wind speel met die blare,
beef my blaar, en ek beef saam.

17. Im Dorfe [sung text checked 1 time]
Je nun, sie haben ihr Theil genossen,
Und hoffen, was sie noch übrig ließen,
Doch wieder zu finden auf ihren Kissen.

Bellt mich nur fort, ihr wachen Hunde,
Laßt mich nicht ruhn in der Schlummerstunde!
Ich bin zu Ende mit allen Träumen -
Was will ich unter den Schläfern säumen?

17. In die dorp
Dis hondegeblaf, dis kettings wat ratel;

Jaag my gerus weg, blaffende honde,
laat my nie rus nie, wie is nou vaak?

18. Der stürmische Morgen [sung text checked 1 time]
Wie hat der Sturm zerrissen
Des Himmels graues Kleid!
Die Wolkenfetzen flattern
Umher im mattem Streit.

Und rothe Feuerflammen
Ziehn zwischen ihnen hin.
Das nenn' ich einen Morgen
So recht nach meinem Sinn!

Mein Herz sieht an dem Himmel
Gemahlt sein eignes Bild -
Es ist nichts als der Winter,
Der Winter kalt und wild!

18. Die stormagtige oggend
Hoe het die storm die lug
se grys kleed afgepluk!
Net flardes wolke fladder
nog floutjies vir ’n ruk.

En leksels roesrooi vlamme
proe aan die eerste blou:
Só lyk vir my ’n oggend,
as ek van hom moet hou!

My hart sien daar sy spieëlbeeld
geteken in die lug –
dit is maar net die winter,
die winter, koud en stug!

19. Täuschung [sung text checked 1 time]
Ein Licht tanzt freundlich vor mir her;
Ich folg' ihm nach die Kreuz und Quer;
Ich folg' ihm gern, und seh's ihm an,
Daß es verlockt den Wandersmann.
Ach, wer wie ich so elend ist,
Giebt gern sich hin der bunten List,
Die hinter Eis und Nacht und Graus
Ihm weist ein helles, warmes Haus,
Und eine liebe Seele drin -
Nur Täuschung ist für mich Gewinn!

19. Misleiding
’n Lig dans vriendelik voor my,
ek volg hom graag deur die kontrei;
ek volg hom graag want ek kan sien
hy wil die reisiger mislei.
Ag, wie soos ek ellendig is,
laat hom graag liemaak deur ’n lis
wat hom in plaas van nag en en ys
’n warm en helder huis kan wys
– waar selfs ’n liewe siel dalk woon.
Misleiding kan my net beloon!

Weiser stehen auf den [Straßen]3,
Weisen auf die Städte zu,
Und ich wandre sonder Maßen,
Ohne Ruh', und suche Ruh'.

Einen Weiser seh' ich stehen
Unverrückt vor meinem Blick;
Eine Straße muß ich gehen,
Die noch Keiner ging zurück.

20. Die padwyser
Hoe vermy ek dan die paaie
waarlangs ander stappers reis,
en loop net verskuilde draaie
deur gebergtes onder ys?

Ek het mos nooit iets begaan nie
dat ek mense moet vermy –
watter sotlike verlange
dryf my in die woesteny?

Padwysers staan langs die paaie,
elk wys na ’n ander hoek
waar ek sonder rus moet rondswerf
want dis rus, rús wat ek soek.

Maar één wyser staan onwrikbaar
voor my oog, vlak by ’n brug:
Elke mens moet dié brug oorstap,
maar nie een kom ooit weer terug.

21. Das Wirtshaus [sung text checked 1 time]
Auf einen Todtenacker
Hat mich mein Weg gebracht.
Allhier will ich einkehren:
Hab' ich bei mir gedacht.

Ihr grünen Todtenkränze
Könnt wohl die Zeichen sein,
Die müde Wandrer laden
In's kühle Wirthshaus ein.

Sind denn in diesem Hause
Die Kammern all' besetzt?
Bin matt zum Niedersinken,
[Und]1 tödtlich schwer verletzt.

O unbarmherz'ge Schenke,
Doch weisest du mich ab?
Nun weiter denn, nur weiter,
Mein treuer Wanderstab!

21. Die herberg
Tot by ’n dodeakker
het my die pad gelei.
Hiér is waar ek wil kuier,
so dink ek toe by my.

Sou hierdie dodekranse
die tekens wees, miskien,
wat moeë stappers uitnooi,
die koele herberg in?

Maar al die huis se kamers
is lank reeds ingeneem –
ek staan ..., en staar ..., en steier
en stort doodmoeg ineen.

Wil jy my nogtans wegwys,
genadelose plek?
Dan, verder, stapper, verder,
hervat jou bitter trek!

Fliegt der Schnee mir in's Gesicht,
Schüttl' ich ihn herunter.
Wenn mein Herz im Busen spricht,
Sing' ich hell und munter.

Höre nicht, was es mir sagt,
Habe keine Ohren.
Fühle nicht, was es mir klagt,
Klagen ist für Thoren.

Lustig in die Welt hinein
Gegen Wind und Wetter!
Will kein Gott auf Erden sein,
Sind wir selber Götter.

22. Moed
Waai die sneeu teen my gesig vas,
skud ek hom net af.
As die hart in my wil praat, dan
sing ek bly en laf.

Ek hoor nie wat hy wil sê nie,
loën sy geraas;
ek voel niks as hy wil kla nie,
klaery is dwaas.

Vrolik stap die wêreld in, vriend,
durf die onweer aan!
Óns is, waar geen god wil wees nie,
kaatjie van die baan!

23. Die Nebensonnen [sung text checked 1 time]
Drei Sonnen [sah']1 ich am Himmel stehn,
Hab' lang' und fest sie angesehn;
Und sie auch standen da so stier,
Als [könnten]2 sie nicht weg von mir.
Ach, meine Sonnen seid ihr nicht!
Schaut [Andren]3 doch in's Angesicht!
[Ja]4, neulich hatt' ich auch wohl drei:
Nun sind hinab die besten zwei.
Ging' nur die dritt' erst hinterdrein!
Im [Dunkel]5 wird mir wohler sein.

23. Die bysonne
Drie sonne sien ek in die lug,
ek het dié drie stip dopgehou
want hulle staan so stil en star
of hulle mý ook wil beskou.

Ag, julle is my sonne nie!
Kyk anderman in die gesig!
Ja, onlangs had ek ook nog drie:
Nou het die beste twee geswig.
Ek wens die derde was ook weg!
Die donker nag is minder sleg.

24. Der Leiermann [sung text checked 1 time]
Drüben [hinter'm]1 Dorfe
Steht ein Leiermann,
Und mit [starren Fingern]2
Dreht er was er [kann]3.

Baarfuß auf dem Eise
[Schwankt]4 er hin und her;
Und sein kleiner Teller
[Bleibt ihm]5 immer leer.

Keiner mag ihn hören,
Keiner sieht ihn an;
Und die Hunde [brummen]6
Um den alten Mann.

Und er läßt es gehen
Alles, wie es will,
Dreht, und seine Leier
Steht ihm nimmer still.

Wunderlicher Alter,
Soll ich mit dir gehn?
Willst zu meinen Liedern
Deine Leier drehn?

24. Die orreldraaier
Anderkant die dorpie
staan die orrelman,
met sy stywe vingers
draai hy wat hy kan.

Kaalvoet in die koue
wankel hy en swik;
sy kollektebordjie
is die leë blik.

Niemand wil kom luister,
niemand kyk na hom,
net die honger honde
maal om hom en grom.

En hy laat dit gaan,
alles, hoe dit wil,
draai en draai, – sy slinger
draai en staan nooit stil.

Koddige ou kêrel,
moet ons saam gaan waai?
Sal jy op mý wysies
ook jou slinger draai?
