Ach, könnt' ich dorthin kommen,

Ach! jenes Land der Wonne,

Doch kommt die Morgensonne,

ja ihanasti tuoksuen hehkuvat 
niiden rusottavat kasvot,

ja vihreät puut laulavat 
muinaisia sävelmiä, 
tuulet soivat salaperäisesti 
ja linnut puhkeavat laulamaan:

ja usvaisia hahmoja nousee 
maasta esiin, 
ja ne leijuvat karkeloiden 
ihmeellisenä parvena,

ja sinisiä kipinöitä välkkyy 
jokaisessa lehdessä ja oksassa 
ja punaiset valot laukkaavat 
sekopäisen villissä piirissä;

ja äänekkäästi pulputtavia lähteitä puhkeaa 
esiin koskemattomasta marmorikalliosta, 
ja puroista säteilee 
outoja heijastuksia.

Voi voisinpa päästä sinne, 
ja löytää sieltä ilon sydämeeni, 
ja päästä eroon kaikesta tuskastani, 
ja olla vapaa ja onnellinen.

Voi, tuon Onnenmaan 
näen useinkin unissani, 
mutta kun aurinko aamulla nousee, 
se haihtuu pois kuin tyhjät vaahtokuplat.

Die alten, bösen Lieder,
Die Träume bös' und arg,
Die laßt uns jetzt begraben,
Holt einen großen Sarg.

Hinein leg' ich gar manches,
Doch sag' ich noch nicht was;
Der Sarg muß sein noch größer,
Wie's Heidelberger Faß.

Und holt eine Totenbahre,
Und Bretter fest und dick;
Auch muß sie sein noch länger,
Als wie zu Mainz die Brück'.

Und holt mir auch zwölf Riesen,
Die müssen noch stärker sein
Als wie der starke Christoph
Im Dom zu Köln am Rhein.

Die sollen den Sarg forttragen,
Und senken ins Meer hinab,
Denn solchem großen Sarge
Gebührt ein großes Grab.

Wißt ihr, warum der Sarg wohl
So groß und schwer mag sein?
Ich senkt' auch meine Liebe 
Und meinen Schmerz hinein.

tuokaa suuri ruumisarkku.

Siihen minä panen paljon kaikenlaista, 
enkä vielä kerro mitä kaikkea; 
mutta arkun pitää olla vieläkin suurempi 
kuin Heidelbergin viinitynnyri.

Ja tuokaa ruumispaarit, 
lujasta ja paksusta laudasta; 
ja niiden on oltava vielä pitempi, 
kuin silta Mainzin luona.

Ja tuokaa minulle vielä kaksitoista jättiläistä, 
niiden pitää olla vielä väkevämpiä 
kuin väkevä Christoph 
Kölnin tuomiokirkossa Reinin varrella.

Niiden jättiläisten pitää kantaa se arkku pois 
ja upottaa se meren syvyyksiin; 
sillä niin suuri arkku 
tarvitsee tarpeeksi suuren haudan.

Tiedättekö, miksi sen arkun 
on oltava niin suuri ja raskas? 
Että voisin upottaa myös rakkauteni 
ja kipuni sen sisällä mereen.
