Птичка божия проснулася с зарею,
А уж пахаря застала за сохою;
Полетит она к лазурным небесам
И, что видит в селах, всё расскажет там.
Скажет птичка богу, что бедняк страдает,
Что кровавым потом ниву орошает;
Не мила, как птичке, пахарю весна,
Не несет с собою радостей она...
Встретил бы он солнце песенкой веселой,
Да молчать заставит гнет нужды тяжелой.
На сердце заботы как свинец лежат,
Поневоле песня не пойдет на лад.
[Где тут любоваться негой лунной ночи, -
Застилают слезы труженику очи...]1
Скажет птичка богу, чтоб его рука
Поддержала в горькой доле бедняка.

Le petit oiseau du bon Dieu
A vu le laboureur las sous la peine et l’âge ;
Il s’envole vers le ciel bleu
Pour raconter là-haut ce qu’il vit au village.

Il va dire au Tsar du ciel clair
Que le pauvre est bien triste et que sa vigueur ploie,
Que, si doux aux oiseaux de l’air,
Jamais le gai printemps ne lui donne de joie.

Il chanterait l’avril vainqueur !
Mais le lourd désespoir le courbe vers la terre,
Le mal met du plomb sur son cœur
Et sa chanson ne peut que pleurer ou se taire.

L’oiseau prira le Tsar des rois
De donner au moujik qui chancelle ou qui tombe
La force de porter sa croix
Et d’arriver enfin, sans murmure, à la tombe…
