Дымится свиток и сгорает,
И огнь сокрытый и глухой
Слова и строки пожирает:
Так грустно тлится жизнь моя
И с каждым днём уходит дымом;
Так постепенно гасну я
В однообразьи нестерпимом...
О, небо, если бы хоть раз
Сей пламень развился по воле,
И, не томясь, не мучась доле,
Я просиял бы и погас!

The scroll smokes and is consumed
And the fire, concealed and indistinct,
Devours the words and lines –
So sadly smolders my life
And with each day it departs with smoke,
So I gradually die out
In unbearable monotony!...
Oh Heaven, if only once
This flame would develop at will –
And, without languishing, without suffering,
I would light up – and go out!
