Die Turmstube ist dunkel. Aber sie leuchten sich ins Gesicht mit ihrem Lächeln. Sie tasten vor sich her wie [Blinde und finden]1 den Andern wie eine Tür. Fast wie Kinder, die sich vor der Nacht ängstigen, drängen sie sich [in einander]2 ein. Und doch fürchten sie sich nicht. Da ist nichts, was gegen sie wäre: kein Gestern, kein Morgen; denn die Zeit ist eingestürzt. [Und sie]3 blühen aus ihren Trümmern. Er fragt nicht. "Dein Gemahl?" Sie fragt nicht: "Dein [Namen]4?" Sie haben sich ja gefunden, [um einander]5 ein neues Geschlecht zu sein. Sie werden sich hundert neue Namen geben und einander alle wieder abnehmen, leise, wie man einen Ohrring abnimmt.

La chambre dans la tour est obscure Mais son sourire éclaire leurs visages. Ils tâtonnent devant eux comme des aveugles et trouvent l'autre, comme une porte. Presque comme des enfants qui effrayés devant la nuit, ils se serrent l'un dans l'autre. Et pourtant ils n'ont pas peur. Il n'y a rien qui pourrait être contre eux : pas d'hier, pas de demain : car le temps s'est écroulé. Et ils fleurissent sur ses décombres. Il ne demande pas. « Ton mari ? » Elle ne demande pas : « Ton nom ? » C'est qu'il se sont trouvés pour être l'un pour l'autre une nouvelle race. Ils se donneront cent nouveaux noms et se les retireront tous l'un à l'autre, doucement, comme on enlève une boucle d'oreille.
