Im Traum sah ich die Geliebte
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG FRE ITA
Im Traum sah ich die Geliebte
Ein banges, bekümmertes Weib,
Verwelkt und abgefallen
Der sonst so blühende Leib.

Ein Kind trug sie auf dem Arme,
Ein andres führt sie an der Hand,
Und sichtbar ist Armut und Trübsal
Am Gang und Blick und Gewand.

Sie schwankte über den Marktplatz,
Und da begegnet sie mir
Und sieht mich an, und ruhig
Und schmerzlich sag ich zu ihr:

Komm mit nach meinem Hause,
Denn du bist blaß und krank;
Ich will durch Fleiß und Arbeit
Dir schaffen Speis' und Trank.

Ich will auch pflegen und warten
Die Kinder, die bei dir sind,
Vor allem aber dich selber,
Du armes, unglückliches Kind.

Ich will dir nie erzählen,
Daß ich dich geliebet hab',
Und wenn du stirbst, so will ich
[Weinen]1 auf deinem Grab.

In my dreams I saw my beloved
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
In my dreams I saw my beloved,
 a timid, troubled woman,
 withered and worn down,
who once was such a blossoming person.

A child she supported in her arm,
another she led by the hand,
 their poverty and misery evident
in their gait, their look, and their garb.

 She staggered across the marketplace,
 encounters me there,
and gazes at me; and calmly
and sorrowfully I say to her:

Come with me to my house,
for you are pale and ill.
I will, through diligence and work,
provide you with food and drink.

I will also maintain and cultivate
these children that are with you,
 but above all else, you,
 you poor, unlucky child.

 I will never tell you
 that I once loved you
 and when you die,
I will weep over your grave.
